European Tour Q School report and scores

Paul Shields only Scot in qualifying zone as

David Law drops to joint 36 after Round 2

Only Kirkhill's Paul Shields is within the top 25 and ties qualifying zone after two rounds of the 108-hole European Tour School Final Tournament at PGA Catalunya, Girona near Barcelona in north-east Spain.
Shields shot a second-round 70, despite a double bogey 5 at the short 16th, and is lying joint 19th in the field of 156 who will gain playing rights on the main tour if they are within the leading 25 and ties at the end of the sixth round.
Shiels had five birdies (third, sixth, 12th, 15th and 18th) but bogeyed the fourth as well as that double bogey at the 16th.
David Law dropped out of the top 25 to a share of 36th place after a 72 for 139. The Aberdonian birdied the sixth and 16th but cancelled these gains out with bogeys at the ninth and 14th.
Ross Kellet, who also plays out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, had a seven-birdie, two-bogey 65, one of the lowest scores of the day, but, even at two-under-par 140, he is only tied 50th alongwith Scott Henry who had a 69 for 140..
The leading 25 and ties are currently at five-under-par 137 or better.
Blairgowrie's Bradley had a double bogey 6 at the fifth in his 69 (37-32) for level par 142, the same tally as Jack Doherty who had a second-round 73.
Peter Whiteford  had a double bogey 6 at the 16th in a 70 for 144 and a share of 105th place.
George Murray from Anstruther chalked up a double bogey 7 atthe long 15th in returning a 70 for 146 and joint 125th place.
Italy's Filippo Bergamaschi (65) and Lukas Nemecz (Austria) (65) lead the field by one shot on 10-under 132.

Five-under-par is current target for top 25 and ties after six rounds

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
As the leaderboard began to take shape in golf’s great marathon, Austria’s Lukas Nemecz and Filippo Bergamaschi of Italy both carded second successive five under par rounds of 65 for 10-under-par 132 to share the second round lead at The European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage.
Day two is always the ultimate leveller in the annual six-round examination at PGA Catalunya Resort, as each half of the field switches course, and it appears those who battled bravely on the tougher Stadium course on the opening day emerged the stronger.
All of the top four after day two emerged from the more straightforward Tour course lay-out, with Nemecz and Bergamaschi signing for rounds of 65 to move to ten under par, a shot clear of Swedish amateur star Marcus Kinhult and Englishman Chris Hanson – who were both on the same side of the draw.
Indeed, the Italian joint-leader played alongside 19 year old Kinhult, who led the field after the opening two rounds of the Nordea Masters in June of this year, and he admitted that playing alongside such an exciting young prospect has buoyed his progress in the opening two days.
“It helps playing with guys that are playing well,” said the 24 year old from Milan. “Marcus is a great player and I’m sure he’s going to be a future star of European golf so it was fun to play with him.
“I’m very happy. I think my best round was yesterday, because I think the Stadium Course is really demanding, it’s a tough course, so I was very happy with a bogey-free five under.
“Today, I didn’t play as well as yesterday but I managed to get a good round. I think there’s at least a two or three shot difference between the two courses.”
Having missed 12 cuts out of 16 appearances on the European Challenge Tour this year, this form appears to have sprung from out of the blue for Bergamaschi, but with a new driver in tow he is now confident he can continue his push for a maiden season on The European Tour.
“I’ve been struggling with my driving all year long, it’s been difficult,” he said. “But I have found a good driver at the start of October, at my last Challenge Tour event in Rome where I finished sixth. After that, having had four good solid rounds with my driving, I think I’m in good shape now.
“I know it’s a marathon so although I’m leading, it doesn’t matter that much. I just want to be in the top 25, so that’s the goal – to play as well as I have done in these first two rounds and keep it going.
“I’m just trying to get as many birdies as I can so that if I have a bad round I’m still safe during the last two rounds, so I’m just trying to make the most of it now and see how it goes.”
Nemecz, meanwhile, was even happier with his second round on the easier lay-out than his opening gambit and he was delighted to put himself in a strong position a third the way through his first trip to the fabled Final Stage.
“It was very good today,” he said. “I actually played better than yesterday, didn’t make any mistakes, hit a lot of greens and gave myself a lot of chances. I made five birdies and no bogeys so it was pretty good, definitely.
“I don’t have a lot of expectations to make the top 25 this week because I haven’t played well this year. If I can make the cut it would be excellent but I’m happy with my game at the moment and that’s the most important thing.”
Michael G Palmer of South Africa and Australia’s Nick Cullen shared fifth place on eight under par, while two-time European Tour winner Richard Finch of England was one of three players a shot further back.
Qualifying School expert Estanislao Goya of Argentina and fellow former Madeira Islands Open winner Ricardo Santos of Portugal, also the 2012 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, both shot seven under par rounds on the Tour course – the joint best rounds of the day – to move to six and four under par for the tournament respectively.
Irishman Paul Dunne, who shared the lead heading into the third round of The 2015 Open Championship, made steady progress by following up his one under par first round with a two under par 68, while 2010 Ryder Cup player Edoardo Molinari struggled to a five over par 77 on the Stadium Course.
