RENFREWSHIRE
GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
Renfrew Golf Club
was the venue for the latter stages of the Renfrewshire Golf Union youth match- play championship.
In almost perfect conditions, the first semi final was between Greenock’s Paul Dorrian and Callum Taggart from Eastwood. With neither player able to master the greens, there was little to choose between the players in the first nine which ended all square but, gradually, Callum started to creep ahead as Paul started to make mistakes and won his place in the final by a 3 and 1 margin.

The second semi
saw Sean Burns from Caldwell against the experienced Cochrane Castle player,
Colin Edgar. Colin stamped his authority
on the match with two opening birdies and a solid par to go three up after
three. This would have deterred many from a fight back but Sean was quickly
back in the match being only one down after five holes. Back came Colin to win the next three and
Sean needed a birdie at nine to be three down at the turn. That was his last win and Colin finished the
match at the thirteenth – six and five.
The final was not
a classic. Eighteen year old Callum
birdied the second to go one up and held this lead until the match went all
square at the eighth. He lost the ninth
and Colin then always had the edge with some impressive ball striking and the
nineteen year old Stirling University student claimed the trophy with a three
and two victory.
BONNYTON TO REPRESENT COUNTY
AT SCOTTISH FINAL
The three man
teams from the golf clubs in Renfrewshire Golf Union fought it out at Eastwood
Golf Club for the Club Team Championship.
The winning team represents the County in the Scottish final at Fortrose and Rosemarkie with the top team there going on to represent
Scotland in the European Club Team Championship. There was really only one team in it as David
Sibbald recorded a respectable 75 followed by David Dickson’s 69 and a very
impressive round of 67 by Willie McMillan.
The aggregate score of 211 was eight shots ahead of the nearest rival,
Caldwell Golf Club.
