IRISHMAN HURLEY, TWO UP WITH THREE TO PLAY,

LOSES THEM ALL - AND THE SPANISH TITLE

The luck of the Irish deserted Gary Hurley (West Waterford) in today's 36-hole final of the Spanish men's open amateur golf championship at Jerez Golf Club, Cadiz, writes Colin Farquharson.
Two up with three to play, Hurley lost the 34th to a birdie, the 35th to an eagle and the 36th to a par, leaving his opponent, Dutchman Jeroen Krietenmeijer, the winner by one hole.
The match had been all square at the end of the first round. Hurley birdied the 33rd to go two up and then it all went pear-shaped for him.

Krietenmeijer, conqueror of the favourite and No 3 seed, Spain's Ivan Cantero in the semi-finals, was the 23rd of the 32 match-play qualifiers. Hurley, a former Maynooth student, was the 16th.
