Fred Couples, pictured above, has confirmed to Golf.com that the U.S. Ryder Cup task force has contacted him about becoming America’s next captain in 2016.
The 11-member task force met for the first time last Tuesday and Couples, who is undefeated in three turns as captain of the Presidents Cup American team, has emerged as the popular choice to captain the next USA Ryder Cup team.
According to various reports, both Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods texted Couples after the U.S. team’s loss at this year’s matches offering their support for his captaincy.
Couples, who spoke during a youth clinic at a golf course opening in Arizona, also questioned Tom Watson’s decision to bench Phil Mickelson at September’s matches.
“I’m not bashing Tom Watson, but sitting out Mickelson, your best team player? Are you kidding me?” Couples said.
Mickelson, and his Day 1 partner Keegan Bradley, didn’t play on Day 2 at Gleneagles, marking the first time in his career he’d missed an entire day’s Ryder Cup action.
After the U.S. team’s five-point loss, Mickelson seemed to question Watson’s leadership style. On Thursday, Couples echoed many of Lefty’s concerns.
“An older man with younger guys. It just wasn’t a good fit,” Couples said.
