US AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING

BRADLEY NEIL A GONER ... FORREST

NEEDS TO CATCH FIRE QUICKLY

You can rule out British amateur champion Bradley Neil from completing a title double in the US amateur championship at Atlanta Athletic Club.
The Blairgowrie teenager is not going to make it among the leading 64 qualifiers who, after the second stroke-play qualifying round, will advance to the match-play stages.
Neil had a first-round 76 and he has made a dreadful start to his second Q Round. He had a triple bogey 8 at the long third, a double bogey 6 at the fifth and a double bogey 5 at the short sixth.
He needed a birdie 4 to reach the turn in 42.
So he is well outside the projected qualifying mark of two or three under par for the 36-hole card-and-pencil test.
The other Scot in the field, Grant Forrest, is not doing that well either although he could yet make it if he produces fireworks on his second nine.
He started at the 10th with a bogey, birdied the long 12th and then stumbled to a double bogey 5 at the short 13th. Another bogey, at the 18th, saw him play his first nine holes in 39.
He had a first round of level par 72. All hope is not lost but Forrest needs to catch fire quickly.
Englishman Sam Horsfield is one Brit assured of figuring in the match-play. He has totalled 139 with scores of 66 and 73
