Lawrie and Ramsay help launch ARCHIE Foundation as Official Charity for 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open

Paul Lawrie and Richie Ramsay, winners of ten European Tour titles between them, today visited the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital to help announce the appointment of The ARCHIE Foundation as Official Charity for the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, to be played at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club from July 10-13.

The two high profile professional golfers – both born and raised in Aberdeen – were able to meet a group of youngsters who benefit from the work of The ARCHIE Foundation, an organisation committed to ‘making the difference’ for sick children and their families in the North of Scotland. 

Lawrie, a two-time Ryder Cup player and winner of The 1999 Open Championship, and Ramsay – a former US Amateur Champion and winner of two European Tour titles – were delighted to join some of the children and participate in a fun indoor putting contest in an ARCHIE funded play area between the children’s medical and surgical wards to mark the charity’s appointment.

 The two golfers also signed some Championship items for the children who took part in the competition and those on the Children’s Ward not well enough to participate.

ARCHIE will benefit from a number of fundraising initiatives that will see title sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management and The Tour Players Foundation (TPF) – the charitable arm of The European Tour – donate funds in partnership, ensuring a substantial sum is raised for the Official Charity, leaving a strong legacy from the golf tournament’s visit to the North-East. 

The Championship’s main fundraising mechanic will see Aberdeen Asset Management and the TPF donate a set amount per birdie, eagle and albatross made by the tournament’s world-class field, via the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Birdie Pledge.  With £5, £10 and £50 donated respectively by both organisations, the grand total raised is expected to be in the region of £20,000. 

Further fundraising mechanics will be announced as the Championship approaches, bolstering the amounts raised from the birdie pledge and benefitting the work that ARCHIE Foundation can do not only at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital but also at its other bases of operation, the Children’s Ward in Inverness and the Children’s Ward in Elgin, as well as funding projects in community hospitals throughout the North East of Scotland and the Northern Isles. 

Lawrie commented: “It is great that The ARCHIE Foundation has been appointed the Official Charity of this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. 

"I am very familiar with the outstanding work the Foundation does on behalf of the sick children and their families in the North of Scotland, and with the event coming to Royal Aberdeen in 2014 it is appropriate that we are able to raise valuable funds for the organisation through initiatives such as the Birdie Pledge.”

Ramsay, like Lawrie an Honorary Member of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, added:

 “I am thrilled to be associated with this initiative in my home town. The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open will be a strong vehicle to help raise considerable funds for such a worthwhile cause.  It’s great to know that every under par score Paul, myself and the rest of players record will have such a positive effect in Aberdeen and the North.”

We are extremely grateful for this and to Paul and Richie for so generously giving their time to engage with the children in hospital. This will all help to make such a difference for them.”

An ‘early bird’ adult season ticket for all four days can be still be bought for £60 until March 31 (£40 concession) with Any One Day adult tickets available for £25 (concession £15) and £8 for the Pro-Am on Wednesday, July 9. 

After April 1, the prices rise to £70 for a season (£50 concession) and £30 for day tickets (£20 concession) and £12 for the Pro-Am.  Under-16s accompanied by an adult are admitted free of charge and all car parking is also free. 

Reserved grandstand seating can also be purchased for the Saturday (£10) and the Sunday (£15) of the event. Hospitality packages are also available.
