IRELAND WIN THE BOYS' HOME INTERNATIONALS TITLE AT FOREST PINES

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R AND A
Ireland were crowned 2013 Boy Home Internationals champions after Roy Archibald’s side came through a dramatic afternoon at Forest Pines where they defeated Wales and Scotland were unable to overcome England in the final session of matches.
In one of the tightest contests in recent years, the outcome remained in the balance until the final singles matches. That didn’t help Archibald’s nerves as he had an agonising wait after his side won 9.5-5.5 to see if Scotland would derail their title hopes.
After Ireland’s win over Wales, Barrie Douglas’ side had to defeat England to lift The R and A Trophy for the first time since they won on home soil at Lossiemouth in 2006.
It wasn’t to be and England did Ireland the service of winning 8.5-6.5 to ensure a first Irish win since Southerness in 2010. Derek Hughes’ England side were the defending champions this week and aiming for three wins in a row at the Lincolnshire venue.
“I’m absolutely elated, that’s the only way I can describe my feelings just now,” beamed Archibald. “First of all it was tense watching my team get the job done against Wales. To then have to wait and see if England could get the necessary result for us to win was even more nerve-wracking. But we got there and I’m delighted. They’re a great bunch of lads. It was a great team effort.”
After taking a 3-2 lead into the singles, Ireland will look back on the top order securing three halved matches when it looked conceivable they might have lost them all. “They were crucial halves to get us over the line,” added the Irish captain in reference to Robin Dawson, James Sugrue and Paul McBride.
Dawson ended the week undefeated and the top Irish points scorer, claiming 5.5 points from a possible six, the same as two Scots, left-hander Robert MacIntyre and Euan Walker.
When the final tally was done, England’s Ben Amor was the only player to finish with a 100 per cent record, six wins from six
For his part, Wales captain Leighton Smith was proud of the way his side competed despite losing all three matches.
“It was a much better performance today. I’d rather leave the tournament on a positive. Even though we lost I know we are going in the right direction,” reflected the Wales captain.
“We certainly scared the Irish for a while. It just goes to show we can do it once you get that belief within the team. They are good players, it’s just bringing the best out of them, that’s the hard bit, but we’ll crack it one day. They are a young side and many of them will learn from this to come back stronger next year”
While Scotland put in a brave effort they came up just short and their captain was left to rue what might have been.
“The standard of golf was really good from both sides,” said Douglas. “Our top man Connor Syme was six under after six holes and only two up. He had two eagles and two birdies to beat one of England’s top players in Ashton Turner 5&4.
“Ewen Ferguson and Benjamin Kinsley were both leading late on but only halved their respective matches against Macro Penge and Harry Ellis. For a time it was still in the melting pot but unfortunately we came up short.”
“I am very proud of the effort my team put in this week. There has been a great team spirit. We just have that niggle of what might have been.”
In any case, the decisive singles match to ensure Ireland’s victory came when Jake Storey defeated Alan Waugh 2&1. That gave Hughes’ side an unassailable lead but the overall England effort also came up short.
“It’s always a tough battle against Scotland; we enjoy the rivalry,” said Hughes after today’s win over Scotland. “We’ll review the week and look to build on it. There are no real negatives, the boys tried their best.
“Ireland played well and deserved to win. Congratulations to Roy and his team.” added Hughes.
The 2014 Boys Home Internationals moves to Scotland and will take place at Western Gailes from 5 to 7 August.

FRENCH BOYS FIRST AND THIRD IN ENGLISH UNDER-14S OPEN STROKE-PLAY

ENGLAND GOLF NEWS RELEASE
For the second successive year, the English Boys under 14 Championship has gone to a foreign player after Antoine Kuoch captured the Reid Trophy in the sunshine of North Hants Golf Club.
The 14 year old French lad, who led the event from start to finish, carded a closing 73 for 211, one over par, winning by five strokes from Coventry’s Tom Charley with another French lad, Niklas Lacroix third on 218.
Last year the title went to Spain and although Derbyshire’s Bradley Moore won in 2011 at Porters Park, Scottish youngsters triumphed in the previous two years, which means only one English player has won the title since Toby Tree was successful at Coxmoor in 2008.
Kuoch (copyright Leaderboard Photography), proved the best of a sizeable overseas entry of 54 players. Leading by five strokes at the start of the day, he covered the front nine in level par to extend his lead to six before a birdie at the tenth edged him seven clear.
But then he ran into his first trouble of the week. At the short par four 14th, Kuoch’s drive finished in rough and in tried to find the green, he fired his second into bushes and lost the ball. Taking a penalty, he chipped short and finished with a triple bogey seven.
Not that it mattered much, in fact he could afford a bogey six at the long 17th and still win comfortably as no one managed to mount a serious challenge.
Kuoch speaks little English so through a translator, North Hants’ general manager Chris Gotla, he said: “This is the biggest title I’ve won so far and it is good. I wasn’t confident coming into the championship as I didn’t have a practice round because my clubs were still at the airport.”
He added that he knew he was seven shots ahead after the tenth hole and the triple at 14 didn’t worry him.
Charley was a deserved runner-up on 216 after three rounds of 72 off a handicap of five. The 14 year old from the Stoneleigh Deer Park club said: “It was a bit of an up-and-down round. I felt conditions were slightly easier than yesterday but some of the pins were difficult.”
The under 13 championship also passed into foreign hands with American Markopolo Fullepp from San Diego, California, triumphant with a final round of 72 for 220, ten over par, one ahead of Spaniard Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra, who bogeyed the last for 74 and 221.

JOHN FRASER, LINDSAY GORDON BEST OF SENIOR SCOTS AT BALGOWNIE

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
By ELSPETH BURNSIDE

Garth McGimpsey, the former Walker Cup Captain and player from Bangor in Northern Ireland, and American Patrick Tallent both produced solid second rounds and will go into the final day of the Senior Open Amateur Championship sharing the lead at Royal Aberdeen.

McGimpsey had three birdies from inside 12 feet in a joint best of day 72, while Tallent’s 73 was composed in the late afternoon when the wind was whipping across the course and sending scores skywards.

On one over par, the pair led by a shot from American George  Zahringer and then there was a four stroke gap to the next group on six over par, Ireland’s Tom Cleary (73) and Arthur Pierse (76), England’s Tyrone Carter (74) and American Steve Gollher (73).

Chip Lutz, winner for the past two years, finished inside the top ten on seven over par, with his round of 79 having been ruined by one hole, a quadruple-bogey eight at the 18th.  He hit his second into gorse, lost the ball and then hit his sixth shot over the green.

“It was a dreadful finish,” said a deflated Lutz. “I fought so hard all day and that one hole could have taken me right out of it. But there is always tomorrow.”

McGimpsey’s best finish in the Championship was third on his debut at Walton Heath in 2010. “I’m really very pleased and I didn’t really expect it,” said the man who played in three Walker Cup teams and the skippered at two. “This is the first time I have played Royal Aberdeen and I really enjoyed it. It’s a great course.”

For Tallent, the goal is to discard his tag as the nearly man. Runner-up in a US Seniors Amateur Champion, the golfer from Vienna in West Virginia has finished fifth, fourth and sixth in this Championship in the past three years.

His 73 was undoubtedly the most consistent of the day. He bogeyed the first and third and birdied the long sixth with a chip and putt. “The rest were pars,” he was delighted to report. “We had some tough weather but I’m really happy with the score.”

It was mixed fortunes for the two first round leaders. New York’s Zahringer, the 2003 Walker Cup player, added a 75 to his opening 69 but Brady Exber failed to make the cut.

Exber, from Las Vegas, had a disastrous nine, nine start and never really recovered. He finished with an 89 – 20 shots more than the first round – and his 16 over par 158 total was three shots too many.

At the first, it was trouble in a bunker including a double hit, that caused the mayhem and a lost ball at the second added to the misery.

By contrast, Zahringer had the highlight of an eagle at the 491-yard sixth. A drive, five iron and 12 foot putt. But he also dropped a few to many.

“I just never quite got into a good rhythm today,” suggested the 2002 US Mid-Amateur Champion. “Mentally, I wasn’t quite as sharp.”

The most spectacular run of the day – four holes in six under par from the fifth – came from American Tony Green.  The man from Knoxville, Tennessee, birdied the firth, eagled the par five sixth, birdied the seventh and then had a hole in one at the eighth.

With halves of 32 and 41 he shot a 73 and his well-deserved reward was making the cut by one on the final 14 over par 156 mark.

The ace at the 147-yard hole was an eight iron shot that hopped once and then dropped into the hole. It was Green’s 15th hole in one of his career.

“This is my time in this Championship and my first time playing links golf,” he said. “I had a similar run in the US Seniors Amateur at Kinloch Virginia two years ago when I was six under for the final five holes.”

John Fraser (Royal Burgess), originally from Newtonmore but now living in Edinburgh, had a fine opening 72 but followed up with an 81.

He still shared the honours as the best of the Scots, finishing alongside Lindsay Gordon (Turnhouse), who had a 79, on 11 over par 154.

Fraser, a one-time Aberdeen P.E. teacher, admitted it had been a tougher day over the Balgownie links but his only birdie of the day – a two at the short 17th – gave some light rel

CHIP LUTZ IS OFF AND RUNNING AGAIN IN SENIORS OPEN AMATEUR AT ROYAL ABERDEEN

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
By ELSPETH BURNSIDE at BALGOWNIE
Aiming to win the title for a third year in a row, Chip Lutz made an impressive start to the Seniors Open Amateur Championship at Royal Aberdeen with five birdies in a one under par 70 but it was fellow-Americans George Zahringer and Brady Exber who shared the first round lead on two under par 69.
Lutz was in a three-way tie for third alongside compatriot Patrick Tallent and Italy’s Federico Lang on a day that was sunny and calm before heavy rain made it tough for the late starters.
Zahringer, a 2003 Walker Cup player from New York, had five birdies and his only real errors were a bogey at the 10th and a double-bogey at the 16th where he found trouble in the rough.
His birdies came from 15-feet at the 6th and then in a glittering run of four in a row from the 12th. The longest putt was a 20-footer at the 14th.
The 2002 US Mid-Amateur Champion has a fine pedigree and has twice claimed the low amateur honours from eight appearances in the US Senior Open.
“I played very patiently and I’m very pleased with the score,” said the Deepdale Golf Club member. “The key is keeping the ball in play and I only used my driver once all day.
“Conditions were good, but the first and ninth par fours were playing very long. I was hitting from 210 yards into the greens.”
Exber is from Las Vegas and he hit the jackpot with six birdies between the second and the 15th – but he also ran out of luck with a bogey, bogey finish.
At the last, he hit into the gorse and had to declare the ball unplayable – “So it was actually quite a good bogey,” he conceded.
“I hit 15 greens but I made a couple of silly mistakes and felt I should have scored better,” continued the plus two handicapper. “Today the weather and the course were absolutely beautiful and I didn’t really take advantage of the ideal conditions. But I really enjoyed the round.”
Lutz, the winner at Royal Portrush in Ireland in 2011 and Machynys Peninsula in Wales last year, is hoping to complete his Celtic hat-trick with a win in Scotland.
By his own admission, the man from Pennsylvania made a shaky start. But he showed his class by picking up four shots on the back nine, all with putts from inside ten feet.
He started by dropping a shot at the first hole – an error he attributed to the pressures of defending the title.
“I was a bit fidgety and a bit unsettled going out as the two-time defending champion,” he said. “But then I calmed down and made a lot of good putts. Overall it was a decent day. My goal going out was to stay close to the lead.”
Paul Simson, the champion in 2006, 2008 and 2010, is the reigning US Senior Amateur Champion and he stayed within touch of the leaders after a three over par 74.
Garth McGimpsey (Bangor), who played in three Walker Cups and Captained Great Britain and Ireland on two occasions, was on level par 71 alongside yet another American, Stanley Kinsey.
“I dropped a shot at the last which was a bit disappointing,” said the man from Northern Ireland.  “But if you had offered me a 71 before I went out I would have bitten your hand off.
“I don’t really play too much these days, just some events on the senior circuit.”
Kinsey finished in the pouring rain but the man from California was still delighted with the outcome. “It was beautiful until the last two holes,” he said. “The rest of the day was pretty still and calm and I really enjoyed it.

SCOTLAND BOYS' COMFORTABLE WIN OVER WALES AT FOREST PINES

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Ireland put a dent in England’s aspirations of defending their Boys Home Internationals title with a hard fought 8-7 win on the second day of the round robin series at Forest Pines where Scotland ran out comfortable victors over Wales.
The day’s results throw open the contest with England, Ireland and Scotland all still in with a chance of lifting the R and A trophy. England are bidding for three in a row, Ireland are hoping to repeat their success of 2010, while Scotland last triumphed at Moray in 2006.
Later on day two, Barrie Douglas’ side eased to a 12.5-2.5 victory against a relatively inexperienced Wales team. The extent of the winning margin could still be a factor depending how results unfold on the final day.
On paper the outcome appeared straightforward, Scotland took a 4-1 lead from the foursomes and closed out the contest by winning the first four singles matches.
Scotland’s Connor Syme defeated Tim Harry 5 and 4 in the top match and Calum Hill quickly followed with his 4 and 2 win against Kyle Harman. Benjamin Kinsley won 3 and 2 against Joshua Davies before Ewen Ferguson’s narrow two-hole win over Charlie Spencer-White sealed the outcome.
Thomas Williams put a Welsh point on the board with his 4 and 3 win over Cameron Kirkwood, while Jack Davidson and Alan Waugh played out a halved match as the sun began to set over the Lincolnshire venue.
Elsewhere Stuart Easton denied Otto Mand (4 and 3), Niall McMullen defeated Thomas Davies (3 and 2) and Euan Walker beat Alex Matthews (2&1). The winning margin was confirmed when Robert MacIntyre maintained his unbeaten run with a 2&1 victory against Ryhs Jones in the bottom match.
“A tough afternoon,” was the succinct response from Wales captain, Leighton Smith. “We have a couple of new kids - seven rookies - and they probably found it hard going today. We’ve got to use the experience and see what tomorrow brings. I dare say we’re in for another tough day against Ireland as they are flying at the moment.”
Douglas was delighted with his team’s performance. “It’s a terrific result. We figured Ireland might beat England so we knew we had to try and get as many points on the board as we could. I’ve been involved for seven or eight years now and we’ve never won by anything like that (margin) before.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s challenge, it’s always good to play England.” The final series of matches will see Ireland play Wales and Scotland take on England.
Matches consist of five foursomes matches, followed by ten singles matches, each played over 18 holes at Forest Pines in North Lincolnshire.
Reports and scores will appear on championships.randa.org throughout the three days of competition.
