MARVELLOUS WIN FOR SENIOR SCOTS OVER EURO CHAMPS IRELAND

Scotland scored a marvellous win over European champions Ireland on the second day of the Senior Men's Home Internationals golf tournament over the Royal Co Down GC links at Newcastle, Northern Ireland today (Wednesday).

In the other match, title-holders England, who drew with Scotland on the opening day, beat Wales 6 1/2-2 1/2 and still have a chance of retaining the President's Trophy.
So, it is all to play for on the final day with the possibility of the contest being decided on the number of games won.
Ireland and Scotland had shared the morning foursomes, but the Scots gained a decisive edge when Ian Brotherston defeated the home side's top man, Garth McGimpsey, 2 and 1.
Then Lindsay Blair added to the Irish anguish when he knocked off the Irish No 2, Arthur Pierse by 4 and 3.
Ireland got one back when Maurice Kelly beat Alan O'Neill, also by 4 and 3.
The advantage swung one way and another in the final three matches, with the KO blow being delivered by Scotland captain John Fraser, who defeated Tom Cleary on the 18th green by two holes.
