NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF

Nigel Evans to become England Golf President in 2015

Nigel EvansNigel Evans, current Board Chairman of England Golf, has accepted the nomination to become President Elect of the England Golf for 2014 with a view to becoming President in 2015.
The 67 year old, who has been involved in amateur golf administration since 1980, says he is delighted and surprised to be considered and is looking forward to the next two years.
“I feel highly honoured and delighted to have been chosen,” he says. “My life has been in golf and golf administration for over 30 years and I feel this is also an honour for my club, Sandiway, and my home county of Cheshire.”
Cheshire born and bred, Nigel began his working life with the National Westminster Bank as a 16 year old and retired in 1998 after 37 years with the bank, most of the time spent in the centres of Liverpool and Manchester. His final post was as Business Director in Chester.
A member of Sandiway for almost 50 years and now an honorary member, in that time Nigel has held the posts of Captain and Chairman and been Club Champion. He has also represented Cheshire at junior, colts, first team and senior levels.
On the administration side, Nigel was a member of the Cheshire County Executive from 1980 – 2005 and is a past Chairman of the Finance, Junior and Selection committees. He was Cheshire President in 1995. He was also a member of the English Golf Union’s Northern Group Committee from 1998 – 2005 and Northern Boys Secretary from 2001 – 2004.
Further involvement with the EGU saw Nigel on the Executive Committee and Finance Committee from 2002 – 05, serving as Chairman of the latter in 2004 – 05 and was a member of the Management Committee in 2005. During the period to 2005, he also served on the Presidents Advisory, Championship, National Coaching, Budget and Remuneration Committees.
He was an EGU Board member from 2005 – 2011 and its Chairman from 2009 and still holds that position with England Golf following the merger with the English Women’s Golf Association and is due to retire next year. Nigel played a major role in the merger, being Chairman of the EGU steering group from 2009 – 2011.
Prior to the merger, he was the Board member responsible for National Coaching and Elite Performance from 2005 – 2011, while he has been the tournament referee for the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship since 2002. He is also a past captain of the Hittite Golfing Society and a member of the Senior Golfers Society.
Nigel is married to Judith, a keen golfer at Runcorn Golf Club, and they have a son Robert, a pilot with easyJet, and a daughter Elizabeth, a specialist physiotherapist.
“I am looking forward hugely to 2015, which is a Walker Cup year, and travelling with Judith to all our major championships throughout the Country” Nigel adds. “Being President is a huge job but I know what is ahead.”
There have been at least six previous EGU Presidents from Cheshire, the most recent being Elwyn Ellis in 2010.
