Warren Bennett is one of seven golfers
who share the lead at the end of the first round of PGA EuroPro Tour
Qualifying School Final Stage at Frilford Heath Golf Club.
Bennett (Prince’s GC), who won the
Scottish PGA Championship in 1999, quit playing in 2009 after a string
of injuries. He played six events on the 2011 PGA EuroPro Tour and
competed in the Open Championship last year. He is now looking
to gain a high category on this summer’s PGA EuroPro Tour.
He shot 67 in his first round at Final
Stage Qualifying School on Wednesday. Starting on the tenth tee of the
Red Course, which stats suggest played two shots tougher than the Blue
Course, he shot birdies at 13, two, four and an eagle at
six on his way to five under par.
Tied with the 41-year-old are Luke Joy
(Broadstone Golf Club) and Gary King (Tyrrells Wood), who also played
their opening round on Frilford Heath’s Red Course. Steven Fawcitt
(Morpeth Golf Club), Steven Capper (Caldy Golf Club), Spaniard
Sebastian Garcia Grout (Golf de Poniente) and Bruce McDonald (Pentland
Golf) also shot 67s and played their first 18 holes on the Blue Course
at the Oxfordshire venue.
Nine golfers are just one shot off the
top after posting scores of 68 in their opening rounds. Ten golfers
trail the leaders by two shots on three under par.
Former Premier League football Jimmy Bullard carded a three-over-par 75 in his opening round on the Blue Course.
PGA EuroPro Tour Qualifying School
Final Stage takes place over 54 holes. All competitors play one round on
the Red Course and one round on the Blue Course on alternate days,
after which the field will be cut to the leading 120 players
and ties who will play a final round on the Blue Course on Friday.
Leaderboard positions at the end of the week are used to determine categories for the 2013 PGA EuroPro Tour season.
