PAUL LAWRIES OPEN BLOG FROM ROYAL LYTHAM

Rnd 2 - 65+71 (-4) 136
Played well the front nine to be out in -1 but made double bogeys at 10 and 12 with a birdie at the 11th in between.
I finished with 71 to be four under overall and still in a good position but now six behind as Snedeker has shot 66 and 64 which is very good round here this week but there's a long way to go.
I have had tremendous support both days which is much appreciated.
Paul Lawrie

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
Paul Lawrie is tied in fifth place alongside Graeme McDowell and, after his opening day 65, dropped only a single place despite a calamitous turn of events that saw him hit double bogeys at both the 10th and 12th.
After the second of those put him back to three under par he scowled at the ball in his hand and it seemed to exorcise whatever demons were hexing him. At the 14th he had an eagle putt from just off the green but converted the birdie from five feet.
“You’ve just got to keep going,” said the Scot. “It was a good performance to be fair. My head was a wee bit scrambled as you can imagine. I three putted from eight feet [at the 10th]. It’s just a shocker.
“Going down to the 13th my head was a wee bit scrambled. To come out of that and play under par from that point in, it was a good performance. It sets you up and gives you an outside chance at the weekend.”

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT
Norwegian Espen Kofstad soared into a share of the lead in the Doubletree by Hilton Acaya Open with a sublime five under par 65 in the third round.
The 24 year old, whose best finish on the Challenge Tour is tied fifth in the 2011 Scottish Hydro Challenge, notched six birdies against one bogey to reach four under par alongside Finland’s Roope Kakko, who signed for a level par 70 at Acaya Golf Resort in southern Italy.
The pair are one shot clear of Dane Joachim B Hansen, and two in front of a trio comprising Frenchman Alex Kaleka (65), former amateur world number one Peter Uihlein, who finished with a triple bogey for a round of 72, and 2008 Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson (66).
With the overnight leaders Kakko, Uihlein and Raymond Russell, who struggled to a 73, failing to extend their advantage, Kofstad was grateful to capitalise.
NOT TOGETHER YET
“I’ve been playing really well for a long time but it hasn’t all come together yet,” said the Oslo player. “This course seems to suit me and the way I like to play. I like to hit the green and make par, and in the last few weeks the scoring has been pretty low, so it has been tough.
“But with no wind today the course was there for the taking and I’m happy I was able to take advantage of that today.
“I did well in Toulouse last year but I was a couple of shots back going into the final day. So this is a new experience and one I will try to enjoy. I’m sure I will be nervous, but that’s a good thing. It makes you feel alive and sharp.”
Kofstad’s fellow Scandinavian Kakko admitted he did not play his best, but was not surprised that  level par was enough to stay in front.
“It’s a really tough course and there’s nothing wrong with shooting par round here,” he said. “It’s funny that sometimes when one person is struggling, the whole group struggles. That’s what happened today and we spent a lot of time looking for balls.
“There are many players capable of winning tomorrow, but the winner will have to go after it. I will have to play smart and aggressive at the same time, which will be difficult.”
A LONG WAY DOWN
Wilson has fallen a long way since playing in The 2008 Ryder Cup, finishing 130th in The 2011 Race to Dubai to lose his card and slipping to 475th in the Official World Golf Ranking. However, the 31 year old is determined to return to the top level, and he believes he has a chance of victory in Acaya if his putting improves.
“It was a really frustrating round but it turned out okay in the end,” he said. “I probably hit it as close as I’ve ever hit it, but just couldn’t hole any putts. I missed a few short ones on the front nine and felt like tearing my hair out.
“But I made a two-putt birdie at the 16th and then holed two six-footers for birdies at the last two holes. So it’s very pleasing in some ways that I’m hitting it so well, but on the other hand I left a lot of shots out there today. If I can hole a few putts tomorrow I should be in with a good chance.
“The Challenge Tour is obviously not where I want to be, but that’s how it is and I have to use it to make my way back to The European Tour. I’m lucky that I’m getting a few European Tour invitations as well, so I just need to take an opportunity somewhere.”

CARRBRIDGE AND CRAIGIEHILL SHARE TOP SPOT AT BOAT OF GARTEN

 NEWS RELEASE FROM SGU
Carrbridge and Craigie Hill shared top spot after the fourth regional qualifier for the 2012 Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship earlier this week.
At delightful Boat of Garten in the north, local Carrbridge duo Barney Mackie and Nia Morrison posted a five-under-par score in the four-ball, better-ball stroke-play, with a 3/4 handicap allowance, format.
It was a tally matched by David Logie and Hugh Macmaster from Perth club Craigie Hill, with four clubs qualifying a shot behind them. Among that quartet were home club duo Debbie and James Grant, as well as Turriff duo John Paterson and James Stephen.
Kintore (James Black and Charlie Lindsay) and Earlsgate were the final two qualifying pairs on three-under-par.
The last remaining regional qualifier takes place at Erskine on August 29.
The grand final of the Belhaven Best Captains and Secretaries Championship for the 40 qualified teams is at Pollok on September 19.
The national championship for Scotland's captains and secretaries is open to all SGU affiliated golf clubs. Now in its seventh year, the championship has quickly become one of the country's most popular events.

McDOWELL IS MOVING UP THROUGH THE GEARS FOR WEEKEND

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Graeme McDowell is moving up through the gears as he heads into the weekend of The 141st Open Championship at Royal Lytham abd St Annes looking to mount another Major challenge.
McDowell, winner of the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach, shot a one under par 69 to move to four under par 136 and into a share of fourth place, six adrift of Brandt Snedeker, as he looks to keep the Claret Jug in Northern Ireland after Darren Clarke’s success last year.
“Haven't quite gotten into fifth gear,” he said.  “I'm probably still in third gear, maybe fourth gear.  I’m just gearing up.”
MAN FOR THE BIG EVENT
Last month McDowell finished joint runner-up in the US Open at Olympic Club after coming within a whisker of a play-off with Webb Simpson, and McDowell is once again rising to the big occasion, unfazed by the size of the Snedeker’s lead.
“Yeah, I'm six behind Brandt Snedeker, but it's just one guy,” said McDowell. “It's not like it's bunched up in front of me.  I've just got to go out and keep doing what I'm doing.  I'm doing a lot of things well, but I can do them better.”
McDowell is sitting nicely in the chasing pack with only Snedeker, Adam Scott and Tiger Woods ahead of him after plotting his way round Royal Lytham and St Annes with three birdies and just the two dropped shots on a course playing exceptionally tough even in the benign conditions on the Lancashire coast.
“You just have to play the waiting game a little bit when the golf courses are this hard,” he said. “I know we've got some wind forecast on Sunday.  So if you can be within four or five shots going into Sunday, that's right where you need to be, because this is going to be a tough test come the weekend.  It's been very benign the last couple of days, but still, it's a tough test of golf out there.”
KNOWS WHAT IT TAKES
And having already won one Major and holed the winning putt in the Ryder Cup, McDowell knows what it takes to perform under the greatest of pressure and has a habit of raising his game as the intensity rises. His performance at Olympic Club last month further reinforced his belief.
“I control my emotions well under pressure,” he said. “I do the right things when I'm under pressure.
“I don't always win.  No one always wins.  But Olympic reinforced to me that I can control myself when I'm in the mix.  But still, you know, I've still got to go out there and do it this weekend.”

Now the stage is set, the cast is gathering and a fascinating two days of golf await.
“The last few groups of a Major Championship, playing with guys like Tiger Woods, that's right where you want to be.”

SNEDEKER MATCHES FALDO'S 10-UNDER-PAR AT MUIRFIELD IN 1992

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
For the past two decades Sir Nick Faldo has been alone in the Major record books for what he did at Muirfield in 1992 - but now he has company in the form of American Brandt Snedeker (pictured).
By adding a six under par 64 to his first-round 66 in The Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes, the 31-year-old from Nashville matched Faldo's 130 halfway total and established a one-stroke lead over Australian Adam Scott heading into the weekend.
TIGER HOLED BUNKER SHOT
Tiger Woods is three strokes further back in third after dramatically holing a bunker shot on the last for a second successive 67, while Paul Lawrie and Graeme McDowell remained at the forefront of the home challenge, six behind, as Rory McIlroy fell back.
Not even McIlroy in his runaway victory at last year's US Open achieved Faldo and Snedeker's score for the first two days, although he would have lowered the mark by one if he had parred rather than double-bogeyed the last of the 36 holes.
Although Snedeker is a three-time winner on the US PGA Tour, including one in a play-off against current World Number One Luke Donald, his Open record was - to put it frankly - abysmal before this week.
Three trips, three missed cuts and not a round under 70.
Yet on a Lancashire links softened by a "summer" of heavy rain he has yet to have a bogey, yet to visit any of the 206 bunkers and stands ten under par.

It could make him the tenth successive first-time winner in the Majors - not that he is getting ahead of himself.

"A great experience, but it gets you a whole lot of nothing," he said after turning in just 30 strokes and then picking up further strokes at the 598yd 11th and 198yd 12th.

"We've got 36 more holes to go - a lot can happen."
CRIED HIS HEART OUT
The closest Snedeker has come to Major glory so far was at the 2008 Masters Tournament. He was two behind with a round to go, but while playing partner Trevor Immelman stayed out in front, he shot 77 and cried his heart out.

"I found out a lot about myself today," he said then, "so we'll keep working."

It is perhaps no surprise to see him playing so well with a full set of 14 clubs in his bag.

At the Volvo World Match Play in Spain in May he began against Thomas Björn with only 10 borrowed ones because his own were delayed en route - and won the first three holes.

Snedeker admits he has been out enjoying "the local ales" once away from the course, but insists his one late night earlier in the week was "to get over the jet lag."
"It's funny I've never played good (until now) because I like being over here and having a good time with it," he said.

He came up with another good answer when told that there will be lots of British people asking: "Who's Brandt Snedeker?"

NOT WELL KNOWN IN US
The World No 29 said: "I'm sure there's lots of Americans saying that too."
Adam Scott had gone from one in front to four behind by the time he resumed and in the circumstances a 67 was no mean performance.

"I didn't take on any unnecessary risks and kept the ball in play pretty well, so it was kind of stress-free," he said.

"Why I've played good this week is a culmination of everything I've done over the last couple of years.

"I feel like this is the path I've been going down and it just happens to have happened here that I've put myself in a good position after two days."

Woods said of his closing piece of drama: "It wasn't as hard as it may have looked. I just threw it up there, played about a cup outside the left and it landed on my spot and rolled to the right.
SMILE ON FACE OF TIGER
"Overall I'm very pleased at where I'm at - I'm right there in the mix."

Dane Thorbjørn Olesen, who grabbed his first European Tour win in April and qualified for the Open in a play-off, also birdied the last to move into fourth place on his own at five under.
McIlroy had been joint sixth with his opening 67, but found a lot of bunker trouble - many with water in them after yet more rain - as he stumbled to a 75. He is now 12 back.
Donald shot 68 to improve to two under, but third-ranked Lee Westwood only just made it through to the weekend on three over.
Alongside him is 62-year-old Tom Watson. Last year at Sandwich he became the oldest player to make the cut in The Open, so he has extended his own record.
Among those to miss the cut were Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, defending champion Darren Clarke, Phil Mickelson and the only two amateurs in the field, Northern Irishman Alan Dunbar and Austria's Manuel Trappel.

AMERICAN SNEDEKER GOES TO TOP OF OPEN LEADERBOARD

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
American Brandt Snedeker, who was a total of 25 over par for his three previous Open Championship appearances, stormed to the top of the leaderboard at Royal Lytham and St Annes this morning.
Snedeker carded an opening 66 to lie two shots off the lead held by Australian Adam Scott overnight, but wiped out his deficit in style with a flawless front nine of 30.
The 31 year old from Tennessee picked up shots at the first, sixth, seventh and ninth to match the outward half of Tiger Woods on Thursday, before adding another birdie on the par five 11th to move to nine under and three clear of the field.
Scott, whose opening 64 matched the lowest Open round at Lytham - posted by Tom Lehman on his way to victory in 1996 - had yet to begin his second round, but no one else had been able to mount a sustained move up the leaderboard.
World Number One Luke Donald carded four birdies in five holes from the fourth to be out in 31 and three under, but then fluffed a chip on the tenth to bogey and dropped another shot on the 13th after firing his straightforward approach over the green.
Two bogeys and two birdies kept Rory McIlroy three under after seven holes of his round, but the former US Open Champion then needed two shots to get out of a greenside bunker on the ninth and dropped further shots on the 12th and 14th to lie one over.
That was just one shot inside the current projected cut mark which four-time Major winner Phil Mickelson looked certain to miss, the left-hander at seven over for the tournament with five holes remaining.
HOLE IN ONE BY OWEN
England's Greg Owen looked to have found the ideal way to survive for the weekend however, holing his second shot to the 18th for an eagle two and second consecutive round of 71. Owen also had an albatross on the par five 11th when The Open was last staged at Lytham in 2001.
In contrast, Nicolas Colsaerts - who started the day one off the lead - ran up an 8 on the seventh and was level par with two holes remaining.
Snedeker picked up his sixth birdie of the day on the 12th to move to ten under and four shots clear, but equally impressive was the fact that he was yet to card a single bogey in the tournament.
Scott dropped a shot on the third to fall back to five under, but 1999 champion Paul Lawrie holed from 15 feet for birdie on the fifth to join former Masters Tournament champion Zach Johnson in second on six under.
Donald completed a 68 to finish two under par, but Padraig Harrington dropped three shots in the last four holes to lie two over and Mickelson completed a 78 to finish 11 over.
Snedeker finished his round with a six-under-par 64 for a halfway total of 10-under-par 130.
