The American says on Twitter his "elbow snapped" when he played a shot on the ninth hole. He finished the day at seven-over 79.

PAUL LAWRIE'S NEW COACH .... AND IT HAS A DRIVER AND WHEELS!

Paul Lawrie and Avril Gill, FirstGroup's Marketing Manager

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY FIRSTGROUP
Paul Lawrie, Aberdeen’s most celebrated golfer, may be in the form of his life, following four top ten finishes in a row, but even his victory at the Qatar Masters two weeks ago could not have prepared him for the trophy he received at FirstGroup Headquarters, Aberdeen today.
The 1999 Open champion was asked to unveil the name of a new FirstGroup coach. To his surprise, its name was ‘Paul Lawrie’.
FirstGroup, the Aberdeen-based transport operator, is one of Paul’s sponsors and celebrated his tremendous recent form by naming a ‘daf temsa safari hd’ coach in his honour.
Initially lost for words, Paul said: “I’m both astonished and very surprised with the gesture from FirstGroup.”
“The company has been hugely supportive over the years, but the last thing I expected on my visit here today was a coach named in my honour. I am very humbled by the gesture.”
He added: “I was also taken aback by the number of FirstGroup staff who came out today to offer their congratulations and best wishes. It was a good opportunity to thank the company and its staff for their fantastic support.”
FirstGroup’s Marketing Manager, Avril Gill, said “We are delighted to be one of Paul’s sponsors. We have also supported his Junior Golf Foundation for seven years. Paul is a tremendous ambassador for golf in Scotland and given his recent achievements we wanted to demonstrate how proud we are of him.”
She continued: “The coach is one of the newest in the fleet and is primarily used for private hire – weddings, shopping trips, holidays and it even transports the Aberdeen FC first team.
"My hope is that as the coach passes through cities, towns, villages and the countryside throughout Scotland, it will remind people that Paul is one of the finest golfers Scotland has produced.”

PHIL MICKELSON CARRIES ON WHERE HE LEFT OFF LAST SUNDAY

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
LOS ANGELES -- Four days after his big win at Pebble Beach, Phil Mickelson keeps right on rolling.
Mickelson hit driver off the deck from just under 300 yards on the par-5 11th that led to a two-putt birdie, and he ended a gorgeous afternoon Thursday at Riviera by chipping in from 35 feet for birdie. That gave him a 5-under 66 and a one-shot lead in the Northern Trust Open.
Dating to the back nine of his second round at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Mickelson has made birdie or eagle on one-third of the holes he has played. And his streak of consecutive holes without a bogey finally ended at 49 on the par-3 16th.
No matter. He looked good with the putter and with his low, penetrating tee shots that he kept below the tree line on a windy day that prevented low scoring.
J.B. Holmes, in his fourth tournament since returning from brain surgery in September, played his final six holes without a par. His round ended with a 315-yard tee shot -- a big drive in the cool air of Los Angeles in February -- and an approach to 8 feet for birdie at No. 9, the second-toughest hole at Riviera.
That gave him a 4-under 67. He was tied with Hunter Mahan, whose 35-foot birdie at No. 5 sent him on a string of four straight birdies.
They all played in the afternoon, when the wind began to die late in the day.
Jonathan Byrd, who faced the chilly, blustery conditions of the morning, had a 68. He was joined by Carl Pettersson.
The first round was suspended by darkness with 30 players yet to finish the round, a typical occurrence at this tournament with 144-man field and limited daylight.
Mickelson is coming off an 8-under 64 in the final round at Pebble Beach, where he rallied from a six-shot deficit -- and beat playing partner Tiger Woods by 11 shots -- to change the outlook on his West Coast Swing. Riviera is his final tournament before the TOUR moves to Florida, and even on a different golf course, not much has changed.
He holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the long par-3 fourth hole, and then really got going on the back nine.
After a tough pitch to 12 feet that led to a birdie on the 10th, Mickelson had 297 yards to the hole on the 11th and decided to hit driver, a shot he had not tried in months.
It came off perfectly and climbed onto the front edge of the green, making Mickelson the only player to have an eagle putt on the 587-yard hole, which played right into the wind. The pin was all the way back, away from a large hump in the putting surface, which gave Mickelson the green light.
His eagle putt from 60 feet died next to the hole.
"I didn't think it was going to necessarily be reachable into that wind, but I was able to hit a low drive off the tee that scooted along the ground, and I felt like if I could hit one more of those with a driver I could get right up by the green," Mickelson said. "I felt like it was worth the risk to try to scoop one up."
The chip-in from behind the 18th was a bonus.
Mickelson made his lone bogey when his chip behind the 16th green ran 7 feet past the cup, and he missed the putt. On the 17th, his wedge rolled back to 7 feet for birdie, but the putt slid by on the left.
He faced another quick chip on the 18th, but it dropped in with perfect speed.
"It wasn't one I was really trying to make," he said. "It was quick, it was downhill, and I had to play about four or five feet of break, so it's not one that you're trying to get aggressive with. I was trying to get good speed and try to let it feed with the break, and I got fortunate, obviously, that it went in."
Holmes was the first player to reach 5 under, and that's where his fun began -- consecutive bogeys when he failed to get up-and-down from just short of the green; a tap-in birdie at the par-3 sixth, with the pin below the bunker in the middle of the green; an 18-foot birdie on the seventh, a three-putt double bogey on the eighth and the birdie at the end.
He has struggled with a slight loss of power since brain surgery in September, and he even topped a shot in Phoenix a few weeks ago. But it's all starting to come together.
"I feel like each week my swing has definitely gotten a little bit better and improved a little bit," Holmes said. "My swing speed has slowly come back a little bit being out here and playing this much."
Byrd woke up Thursday morning to hear the wind whipping at his rental house on the Pacific bluffs. The last thing he wanted to do was play golf at Riviera, but it worked out well for him. He made five birdies in the toughest of conditions. The average score from the morning wave was 73.7.
"We're staying up on a bluff about five miles away," he said. "I got out of bed this morning and walked outside, and I was pretty anxious about playing this golf course today because it was howling on top of that bluff. And it whipped all day. My approach was just to keep it in play and have a pretty conservative game plan."
The afternoon players got a slight break, though the wind remained a factor.
"The last seven holes the wind started to die down progressively, and by the end, it couldn't be playing any nicer or any better," Mahan said. "So I was excited to come make some birdies late."
DIVOTS: UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay, who didn't miss a cut on the PGA TOUR last year, opened with a 78. The Northern Trust Open also gave an exemption to Texas freshman Jordan Spieth, who had a 76. ... Tim Clark, playing for the first time since THE PLAYERS Championship because of elbow surgery, was 4 over through 16 holes.

THREE SHARE LEAD IN NATIONWIDE TOUR OPENER IN COLOMBIA

By Joe Chemycz, Nationwide Tour staff
BOGOTA, Colombia -- Veteran Peter Lonard of Australia fired a 5-under 66 Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship, the first event on the 2012 Nationwide Tour schedule. Lonard is joined at the top by Americans Brian Smock and Billy Horschel.
Morgan Hoffman and rookie Erik Flores are tied for fourth at the Country Club of Bogota, one shot back of the leaders.
Eight players, led by defending champion Brenden Pappas, are knotted at 3 under.
Three players couldn't beat the darkness and weren't able to finish play. That group will be back at the course and resume play at 7:30 Friday morning local time.
The 44-year old Lonard completed his round in the morning and held the clubhouse lead for most of the day. Horschel ran off a string of four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to take the lead at 6-under before three-putting the final hole to fall into a tie.
"I'm going to have nightmares about that last one," Horschel joked afterwards. "I hit two good shots and I hit a great first putt that just broke off and left me with a two-footer. I didn't want to leave myself with that. I got up there and had a little downhiller and wanted to let it die in the hole. I completely stopped my hands and the ball started left and stayed left. I [should] have just jammed it in the back. It'll stick with me for about 20 minutes."
Horschel's miss cost him a share of the course record, first set by Tag Ridings in the first round two years ago.
"Other than that last one, it was a good day. I made a lot of birdies and had an eagle to start the day," said the former Florida Gator. "It could have been better and I'll take it."
Thursday's season opener didn't produce dramatically low scores despite the fact that lift, clean and place conditions were in effect, thanks to seasonal rains that produce almost-daily afternoon and evening storms.
"I don't think it makes a massive difference," said Lonard. "It's more about controlling your ball. It's important because the ball stops where it lands."
It's also important to pick the right clubs, given the fact that Bogota is about 8,400 feet above sea level.
"I'm probably one of the medium hitters so it's about a 10-percent adjustment," said Lonard. "If I want to squeeze a bit more than that I just hit it higher. The ball carries about 15 percent more if you get it up in the air."
The 44-year old from Sydney, Australia has conditional status on the Nationwide Tour and hopes to get one more shot on the PGA TOUR, where he averaged 26 starts a year from 2002-09.
"I'm no spring chicken and there comes a time when you have to decide whether you're going to keep going or you're not," he said. "I suppose this is a make-or-break year. I'm not getting any younger. We'll see how we go this year.
"Obviously this year is the only year I'm interested in at the moment. If I have a really bad year then I'm probably done but I'd like one more shot at the main tour."
Hoffman would appreciate a shot at any tour. The former Oklahoma State All-America has no status on any tour for the 2012 season. He missed qualifying for the final stage of the 2011 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament by a single stroke and now has to find ways to get into tournaments.
Hoffman's move up the leaderboard came courtesy of his putter.
"My putting was on today," he said. "I drained three big putts today, all of them over 40 feet. It was pretty crazy. My wedges weren't really good but everything else went pretty well."

PAUL CASEY PULLS OUT OF NEXT WEEK'S WORLD MATCH-PLAY

FROM THE BBC SPORTS.COM WEBSITE
Paul Casey has been ruled out of next week's World Match Play Championship in Arizona due to his shoulder injury.
Casey, who was runner-up in the event two years running in 2009 and 2010, dislocated his shoulder while snowboarding in Colorado last month.
The Englishman is hoping to return to playing at the WGC Championship at Doral, Miami in three weeks' time.
South Africa's George Coetzee replaces Casey and faces top seed Luke Donald, the defending champion, in round one.
Casey, runner-up to Australia's Geoff Ogilvy in 2009 and compatriot Ian Poulter the following year, will miss out on the chance of a top prize of £900,000 in Arizona.
The Surrey-based Cheltenham-born golfer had been told after his accident that he faced two months out of action, which could also dent his hopes of a Ryder Cup place.
A rib injury impaired his chances of qualifying automatically for the Europe squad in 2010, captain Colin Montgomerie deciding not to offer him a wildcard.
Donald, the world number one, will face Coetzee at Dove Mountain, unless any other players withdraw before Monday's official draw.
Rory McIlroy, who will replace Lee Westwood as World No 2 after this weekend, is currently set to face seven-times Volvo World Match Play champion Ernie Els in the first round.
The 2011 US Open winner also revealed that he has been working on reshaping his swing, concentrating on altering "a few fundamentals''.
"I still feel it's going to take a couple more weeks to fully click in and that if feels completely comfortable, but it's definitely on the right track,'' said McIlroy.
"Hopefully, there will be a day when it all clicks and it comes easy to me."

COMMENT PIECE BY GREIG HUTCHEON

Great tournaments on the Hi5 Pro Tour but tough 30-40 km winds have been the regular conditions along with full waterproofs plus wooly hat.
These conditions plus greens at 10 plus on the stimp have led to green watering during the golf which I haven't seen since Australia!
I was hoping for better playing conditions to work on my game but instead I'm tired of tough grinding days and my back problem seems to be flaring up.
Due to see physio tomorrow.

WHITEFORD, CANIZARES SHARE LEAD ON 66 AT AVANTHA MASTERS

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
A closing birdie took Alejandro Canizares into a share of the lead after the first round of the Avantha Masters as the Spaniard looks for his first win since 2006.
The 29-year-old birdied the long ninth to complete a back nine 32 and six under par 66 at DLF Golf and Country Club, New Delhi in India.
That matched the effort of Scotland's Peter Whiteford (pictured), with Italy's Federico Colombo a shot further back in third.
Canizares began on the back nine with birdies at the 11th and 15th, before gaining four shots in six holes immediately after the turn.
A first bogey of the day came at the seventh, but his lengthy closing birdie putt secured a share of the lead on a tightly-packed leaderboard.
"It's always nice to finish on a high like that,"said the former Russian Open winner. "I hit a great wedge shot into the green so it was nice to sink the putt. I played very steady and I putted quite nicely. The only mistake I made was missing a short putt on the seventh so I made a bogey.
But overall it was a nice round with not many mistakes. I had a couple of wayward drives but nothing serious and I felt very comfortable.
"I made a couple of long putts but all the others were from inside ten feet or so. Overall it was very steady and pretty good.
"Hopefully I can keep this going and be in contention going into the final round."
Whiteford was only one under par at the turn, but the 31 year old Scot, still chasing his first European Tour title, birdied four in a row from the tenth.
A further gain came at the driveable par four 17th, and the former Challenge Tour graduate felt improvements to his long game had been pivotal.
"It was the first time I've hit all the fairways in months," he said.
"I hit a lot more drivers than people usually do out there and just took advantage of the course and bullied it a little. It can bite you easily though if you're not careful. I had a bad one down the last but apart from the driving that was loads better today."
Colombo, 24, was the only one of the top three to compile a bogey-free round, with Himmat Rai the leading home player on four under along with Welshman Jamie Donaldson, former US Open runner-up Gregory Havret, his fellow Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Gonnet and Thai duo Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who carded the best score of the morning starters.

GREGORY NAMED AS COACH TO THE US PALMER CUP TEAM

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
Southern Methodist University (SMU) coach Josh Gregory, who led Augusta State to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2010-11, has been named the U.S. coach for the 2012 Palmer Cup match.
The annual Ryder Cup-style competition, featuring student golfers from both sides of the Atlantic, will be held June 28-30 at Royal County Down in Newcastle, Northern Ireland.
Gregory is in his first season at SMU after leading Augusta State to 18 tournament titles during his tenure. The Jaguars’ back-to-back NCAA titles were the first for a school since Houston in 1984-85.
Georgia Tech assistant Christian Newton, recipient of the 2011 Jan Strickland Award as the national assistant coach of the year, will serve as Gregory’s assistant on the Palmer Cup team.
The U.S. leads the Palmer Cup series 8-6-1 and has won two straight. The team will be finalised later this spring.
