NEWMACHAR FOUR BID FOR UNIQUE NORTHERN COUNTIES TREBLE

Newmachar Golf Club's four players who have won the Northern Couties Cup in 2010 and 2011 are going for a unique treble at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club from Thursday to Saturday.-

Richard Barr, Chris Simpson, Mark McKechnie and John Duff are the men in the spotlight once again for this oldest of double foursomes team match-play tournament.

It was first played at Royal Aberdeen way back in the 1900s.

Cruden Bay 1 have an interesting new combination for the tournament - Laurie Phillips with Michael Buchan and J. Godward with A. Duff

There is a full house of 40 teams taking part from Orkney right down to Aberdeen which shows you that fashions come and go but the Northern Counties Cup goes on forever.

Organising tournament secretaries, however, have a life-span in their posts!

Eddie Sherwood, ex B.T. Manager, is retiring as the main man after 12 years. He saw the introduction of a new Senior Northern Counties Cup sponsored by B.D.Fraser of Inverness. Held in May of each year and run along the same lines as the Northern Counties Cup.

Eddie's successor as Northern Counties Cup secretary is 

Gary Abel of Elgin Golf Club – also an ex B.T.Manager.

Ah well, Gary, that's your spare time taken up for at least the next 12 years.

Eddie Sherwood's predecessor, Jimmy (?) Thomson from the Moray club performed the duties for over 20 years I think.
