Javier Ballesteros, son of late golf great Seve Ballesteros, won the amateur Madrid Open on Sunday to secure the biggest win of the fledgling Spaniard's career.
The young Ballesteros, who is currently studying law in Madrid, finished the
54-hole tournament at six under par to win by four strokes.
The 22-year-old Javier dedicated the win to his father, who died last May at
the age of 54 after a long battle with cancer.
He said: "My father always told me that you have to play with what you
got, and that's what I did. I thought about him a lot during the last 18 holes
and I dedicate this victory to him and my mother."
Seve Ballesteros won five major titles, recorded 50 victories on the European
Tour and transformed European golf.
The victory in Madrid will no doubt raise the question of whether Javier can
replicate some of his father's success in the sport. He has delayed a
decision on turning professional until after he completes his law studies at
the city's Complutense University.
He made his first appearance in a professional event at the Peugeot Alps de
Barcelona tournament in April and finished tied for 12th, 12 shots behind
winner Pablo Larrazabal, after a final round of 68.
