SURPISE LEADERS IN NEWLANDS TROPHY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON Colin@scottishgolfview.com  Hamilton's Stewart Henderson and Michael Daily (Erskine) are the surprise halfway leaders in this weekend's SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament, the Newlands Trophy at Lanark Golf Club. They share the lead of four-under-par 136, both with rounds of 69 and 67. They have a one-shot advantage over first-round leader Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) (66-71) and Paul Ferrier (Baberton) (69-68), semi-finalist in the British amateur championship at Royal Troon last month. Former Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman (Dollar) maintained his recent improved form to post scores of 68 and 70 for 138, which gives him joint fifth place going into the final two rounds with Alan Sutherland (Ladybank) (69-69), Paul Shields (Bathgate) (72-66) and James White (Lundin) (70-68) The cut fell at 149 and on the wrong side of that mark was Allyn Dick (Kingsknowe), winner of the Newlands Trophy for the past two years. He had scores of 76 and 74 for 150. Another surprise non-qualifier for the Sunday action was Fraser McKenna (Balmore), a winner more than once on the elite circuit this season. He had scores of 77 and 73.
