STRICKER MAKES IT THREE JOHN DEERE CLASSICS IN A ROW

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
SILVIS, Illinois(AP) — Steve Stricker's third straight victory in the John Deere Classic certainly was the most challenging - and by far the most dramatic.
With nine holes to play, Stricker led by five strokes. With two holes left, he was two shots down.
Twice, Stricker buried shots deep in bunkers, one so far under the sand he had a hard time finding the ball. At a third bunker, he had to take an awkward stance just to give himself a chance to swing.
But he won nevertheless, sinking a 25-foot putt from off the 18th green Sunday to beat rookie Kyle Stanley by one stroke.
"It became hard, real hard," said Stricker, who was grateful for the encouraging words from caddie Jimmy Johnson.
"Jimmy was right there telling me the whole time, you know, it's not over yet, just keep plugging, you never know what's going to happen," Stricker said. "And sure enough, he was right. Just play it all the way out and see what happens."
Stricker's clutch putt capped a roller-coaster round on a steamy afternoon and gave him a 2-under par 69, good enough to make him the 10th golfer since World War II to win a tournament three straight times.
Despite a double-bogey on No. 5, when he needed two shots to get out of a greenside bunker, and bogeys on 15 and 16, Stricker finished at 22-under 262. Stanley, 23, whose best finish previously had been a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in late March, closed with a 66.
"It was an unbelievable week and an unbelievable finish," Stricker said. "I still can't believe I'm sitting here."
Matt McQuillan, who had missed the cut in his previous 10 tournaments, shot a 64 to tie Zach Johnson (65) for third at 17 under. Charles Howell III (64) and Chez Reavie (72) were another stroke back.
Stanley zoomed in front with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine, and kept the lead by salvaging par on 17 after sending his tee shot into a grove of trees. But he missed a 9-foot par putt on 18 to open the door for Stricker, who took advantage.
Stricker had fallen two behind with those back-to-back bogeys, which seemingly ended his hopes of a "three-peat."
"I really did feel like the momentum was gone for a while," he said. "Those holes kind of derailed me there."
But he regrouped quickly. Stricker knocked in a 15-foot putt for birdie on 17 to cut Stanley's lead to one stroke, then made what turned out to be a tournament-saving shot from a bunker on the left side of the fairway on 18.
Standing with his left foot in the bunker and his right foot on the lip, Stricker hit the ball solidly and left it on the fringe of the green behind the pin, drawing a huge roar from the crowd.
The next roar was even louder. Using his putter, Stricker sent the ball toward the cup and watched it curl in from the left side. The 44-year-old from Madison, Wisconsin, a crowd favourite at this tournament, backed away as the ball neared the hole, then raised his arms and pumped his fist to celebrate the moment.
"It's weird," Stricker said. "When I get into a situation where I have to make a putt, I feel like my nerves kind of go away and I focus extremely hard on trying to make that putt. And that's kind of like the little zone I got into on 17 and 18, I guess."
With the victory, Stricker joined a small but noteworthy group of golfers who have won a tournament three years running. The list reads like a Who's Who's of the game and includes Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ben Hogan and Johnny Miller.
Woods has done it six times and Palmer twice.
"I kept telling myself that it's not a big deal and it really wasn't - until today," Stricker said. "That back nine trying to win, it's just really hard. I don't know any other way to say it. It's extremely hard to put it away.
"When you watch guys like Tiger put away all those tournaments, anybody who's put it away down the stretch, it's a difficult thing to do. But I'm happy to come out on top. I made a couple of putts when I had to."
Woods also is one of just four golfers who has won a tournament four straight years. The way Stricker has mastered the TPC Deere Run course, you can't discount his chances of joining that group, too.
Stricker finished 26 under at last year's tournament and was 20 under in his 2009 victory.
So, was he ready talk about four in a row.
"No," Stricker said with a smile.
Stanley claimed a nice consolation prize, earning the spot in the British Open that goes to the highest finisher in this tournament who's not already qualified. But if it hadn't been for Stricker's late heroics, Stanley would have had his first victory on the tour.
"I'm very excited to go over there (to England)," he said. "But I'm still trying to calm down from that round."
Stanley trailed by five strokes after Stricker buried a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 9. But showing the poise of a tour veteran, he went on his birdie run to take the lead, making a 26-foot birdie putt on 13, an 18-footer on 14 and a 36-footer on 15 to go up by a stroke.
"I just kept giving myself good looks and putts that I did in practice rounds and putts that I knew what they were going to do," he said. "I just kept trying to make birdies and give myself opportunities."
After his par save on 17, Stanley got into trouble on 18 when he went from the rough to a greenside bunker. He was in good position to salvage par again when he chipped up to 9 feet, but he missed the putt and took bogey, giving Stricker the opportunity he needed.
Stricker won for the second time this year and 11th time in his career, with eight of those victories coming after he turned 40. He won the Memorial a month ago and now has multiple wins in three consecutive years.
Only four others have done that since 2000: Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els.

JAMES STEVEN, ONLY 17, WINS LANARKSHIRE MEN'S COUNTY TITLE

James Steven, aged 17 and a Bothwell Castle GC member, today became one of the youngest winners of the Lanarkshire county championship over 36 holes at Airdrie Golf Club.
James, who gets coaching from the SGU and plays on the SGU Junior Tour, had excellent scores of 67 and 68 for a three-under-par aggregate of 135.
This will give him confidence for his twin assault on the Scottish boys' stroke-play championship and the Scottish men's amateur championship in the next three weeks at Nairn Dunbar and Western Gailes respectively.
Runner-up was James Whitelaw (Hollandbush) with an aggregate of 137 (67-70). He was left to rue a lost ball at 17 when two pars to finish would have forced a play-off.
The top 16 players available will play the Lanarkshire match-play championship at Airdrie over four nights - Thursday-Friday, July 14-15, and Thursday-Friday, July 21-22.
Unfortunately, James Steven can’t play in the county match-play event because of Scottish commitments.

McKENNA BEATS ROBERTSON IN SUTHERLAND CHALICE PLAY-OFF

JAMES WHITE SQUANDERS FOUR
SHOT LEAD OVER
FINAL ROUND

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Dunbartonshire golfer Fraser McKenna (Balmore) beat Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off to win this weekend's SGU Order of Merit 72-holer, the Scottish Fuels Sutherland Chalice at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.
They had tied at the top of the leaderboard on eight-under-par 272 over the par-70 course after the long-time leader, James White (Lundin), recent winner of the Tennant Cup and the 2006 Scottish boys match-play champion, had surprisingly lost his touch and a four-shot lead with a last-round 75 for 275, which saw him finish fourth behind McKenna and Robertson, and the third-placed Paul Shields (Kirkhill).
Robertson has been one of the most consistent performers in this season's SGU Order of Merit events and he was certainly due a win after a string of top three finishes but once again he found one man too good for him at the death.
Robertson had been runner-up at the Tennant Cup and third in both the East of Scotland Championship and Cameron Corbett Vass.
This time it was Fraser McKenna, beaten finalist in the 2008 British boys' championship, who had shared second place with Robertson four shots behind leader White with one round to go. They both enjoyed a seven-shot turnaround with the leader over the last 18 holes, finishing with 68 apiece to the Fifer's 75.
McKenna, who spent a spell on the US college golf circuit as a student at Louisiana University and was top Scot in sixth place at this year's Lytham Trophy, prevailed at the second hole of a sudden death play-off which would not have been necessary had he not carelessly incurred a penalty on one of the greens during a third-round 68 when he accidentally moved his ball after he picked up his marker.
It was McKenna's first SGU Order of Merit tournament success.
Shields finished with a 68 for 273, only one shot behind the play-off participants.
Alexander Culverwell would have won the tournament had it been restricted to Sunday's two rounds. He had a pair of 66s for a Sunday aggregate of 132, compared with a Saturday two-round total of 144. He finished fifth on 276.
The low rounds of the tournament were achieved in Saturday's first round at the end of which the lead on six-under-par 64 was shared by Adam Dunton, all the way down to Dumfries from Ellon in Aberdeenshire, and Glasgow's Steven Maxwell (Windyhill).
They were headed by James White over the second round as he had a pair of 67s to lead by one shot at the halfway stage - a lead stretched to four shots with a third-round 66 ... before the wheels, smooth running until then, came off.
Dunton finished a creditable seventh on 279, despite a last-round 74 which was 10 shots worse than his opening effort.
Scott Crichton (Aberdour) and Philip McLean (Peterhead), 1-2 in last weekend's Cameron Corbett Vase at Haggs Castle after a play-off, never threatened a repeat at Dumfries and Galloway.
McLean, in fact, only made the halfway cut bang on the limit mark of 147 with rounds of 75 and 72. His Sunday total of 135 (67-68), a bit like Culverwell, was 12 shots better than his Saturday aggregate.
Philip finished 10th on 282. Crichton finished joint 13th on 285 with his last round of 69 being his best of the four.

LUKE DONALD WINS SCOTTISH OPEN WITH 19-UNDER-PAR TOTAL

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Luke Donald’s glorious 2011 continued as he made the Barclays Scottish Open his third title of the year.
The World No 1, who won the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play in February then added The European Tour’s flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in May, closed with a flawless 63.
The 33-year-old’s nine-under-par round secured a 19 under par total at the spectacular Castle Stuart Golf Links to run out a four shot winner from Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed, who signed for a best of the week 62.
Luke Campbell Donald, originally from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, shot the lowest round of his European Tour career in the land of his father – Luke marked the fact by wearing tartan trousers – as he dominated the rain-shortened event on the final day.
It was his second successive triumph in Europe and now he will try to put the icing on the cake - at Sandwich - by capturing his first Major title at The Open Championship next Sunday.
"It's nice to get another victory - I can get used to this," he said. "To do it on a links is even better and when I play well I tend to do reasonably well the next week.
“I holed putts when I needed to, and it's nice to do it when it matters.
“The scoring conditions were there - Fredrik had a very low one, after barely making the cut, he finished second.
“If you played well it was there for the taking with the greens being softer and very little wind. But I holed the putts when I needed to, and I holed a bunch of 20, 25 footers out there today, and had a good feel for the greens. I was seeing the lines very well and it was nice to hole them when it mattered.
“I felt good out there. I felt very comfortable and very in control, and that's a good sign for next week.”
After Saturday's wash-out cut the tournament from 72 to 54 holes, Donald first of all had to play the second half of his second round, starting at 7am and did that in three under par to close the gap on the leaders from four to one.
Then he went out again after lunch and left the rest for dead, taking the €550,249 first prize with a total of 197.
With Lee Westwood coming joint 14th, Donald also stretched his lead at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.
And it is such a gap that Rory McIlroy - next week's Open favourite following his amazing US Open Championship win - cannot now go to No 1, even if he lands back-to-back Majors.
Runner-up Andersson Hed burst out of the pack with a best-of-the-week 62, while in a seven-way tie for third Scotland's European Tour rookie Scott Jamieson was the happiest man.
That was because a 10ft birdie putt he holed at the last gave him the one Open Championship spot on offer.
Chile’s Mark Tullo, South African George Coetzee, Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and Italian Lorenzo Gagli were the others to finish 14 under.
Jamieson said: "I wasn't sure how important that putt was.
"I can't believe I'm in The Open - it's great. First Major, hopefully many more to come."
In seven European Tour starts this season Donald has now earned a staggering €3,153,531.
That works out at an average of over €450,000 per week and his career earnings on The European Tour alone - he also has victories in America to his name - could go through the €11,000,000 mark this coming week.
There were four leaders with a round to go - Jamieson, compatriot Peter Whiteford, Swede Peter Hanson and Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.
Jamieson was the only one to break 70. Whiteford fell away with a 73 and McDowell was one worse than that after putting two balls in the gorse on the long 12th and running up a quadruple bogey 9.
Until then he had hopes of catching Donald. He finished eight behind him and 42nd.

JAMIE MOUL WINS CHALLENGE TOUR 25,600 Euros FIRST PRIZE

By SARAH GWYNN
European Challenge Tour Press Officer
Englishman Jamie Moul claimed his first Challenge Tour title at the Acaya Open in Italy with a stunning five under par 65 in the final round.
The 26-year-old from Colchester, a Walker Cup player in 2007, had a string of birdies on the back nine to shift the momentum in his direction and despite bogeying the 18th he ultimately finished one shot clear of Spaniard Jorge Campillo, the overnight leader who had a two under par 68, and Branden Grace, who equalled the course record with a sparkling 64.
Campillo led for most of the day but a double bogey at the par five 16th proved costly. He needed to hole a 15-foot putt for birdie at the last to force a play-off, but he missed, handing Moul the €25,600 winner’s cheque.
Moul, pictured above by Claudio Scaccini, started the final round two shots off the pace, but had an eagle at the par five first to crank up the pressure on Campillo. He reached the turn in two under par, and picked up further shots at the tenth, 14th, 15 and 16th.
“I’m over the moon,” he said. “It was a crazy day. I hit it much better today after a bit of work on the range after yesterday’s round, and I putted out of my boots. It’s the kind of thing you’ve got to do to win.
“The eagle on the first helped settle the nerves. I hit my second shot to about four feet so it was a nice way to start. I dropped shots at the next two par 3s though so I was disappointed to give those shots back early on.
“I made some good putts on the back nine – the three consecutive birdies were all good putts. I wasn’t trying to see what was going on elsewhere. I just wanted to take care of what I was doing and thankfully I was able to finish it off.

“On the 18th I had a nasty bunker shot for my third shot which came out a little harder than I wanted and just rolled off the back of the green. But I’ve been chipping well all day so I was confident I would get it up and down from there.
“This now means I can schedule the back half of the season. I was category 11 so I wasn’t getting into many events. I wasn’t in for next week (the Credit Suisse Challenge). I was getting calls on Mondays and Tuesdays to go to events, but now I can plan it, so it makes a massive difference.
“I can also reassess my goals now – obviously the Rankings is in my head now and a place in the top ten come the end of the season is certainly a goal now.”
Campillo was distraught to have thrown away his chance for victory with a stray tee shot into heavy rough on the 16th, which should have been a great opportunity for birdie.
“It’s so disappointing,” he said. “I hardly missed any shots all day but on the 16th I pushed my drive right and couldn’t get out of the thick rough. It’s frustrating but I played well today so I can’t be too down.
“I knew I needed to make that putt on the 18th but I overhit it a little. I wasn’t nervous, I just wanted to make sure I didn’t leave it short. It’s one of those things.”
Grace holed a 20-footer for birdie at the last for a share of second, equalling his best Challenge Tour performance.
“I had some great par saves on the back nine and that nice putt at the end was a perfect way to finish,” he said. “I knew at the 15th that there were some good birdie chances coming up, and I was disappointed not to birdie the 16th, but that’s golf.
“It’s my best finish of the season and shows I’m heading in the right direction. This will also push me up the Rankings a fair bit so that’s great too.”
Englishman Dale Whitnell, a Walker Cup player in 2009, set the new course record with a 64 earlier in the day, and Grace was equal to his efforts.

AMERICANS NAMED FOR PGA CUP MATCH IN SEPTEMBER

FROM THE PGA WEBSITE
GB and I PGA Cup captain Russell Weir and his 10-man side have discovered the majority of the United States team that stands in their way of a historic first win on America soil.
The conclusion of the PGA of America's PGA Professional National Championship in Pennsylvania unveiled eight of the side that will be skippered by PGA honorary president Jim Remy.
The final two players in the side will be announced after the USPGA Championship in August.
This year's 25th PGA Cup Match is being played at CordeValle Resort, San Martin, California, between September 16-18, with the GB and  I team aiming to wrestle back the Llandudno Trophy, which was first competed for in 1973.
Leading the US challenge is the new PPNC champion David Hutsell of Baltimore. Hutsell, 40, the PGA director of instruction at The Elkridge Club won the championship following a two-hole play-off at Hershey Country Club.
Hutsell will make his first appearance on the US team in the premier international competition for PGA Professionals.
Joining Hutsell are Danny Balin (Burning Tree Country Club, Connecticut); Faber Jamerson (Falling River Country Club, Virginia; Scott Erdmann (Oswego Lake Country Club, Oregon); Sonny Skinner (River Pointe Golf Club, Georgia); Rob McClellan (Butler Country Club, Pennsylvania); Mark Sheftic (Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania); and Mike Small (University of Illinois, Illinois).
Balin, Erdmann, Hutsell, Jamerson and McClellan will be making their first appearance in the PGA Cup. Sheftic and Skinner, who each competed in 2009, will be making their second appearance, while Small will be playing on his fourth straight team.
The PGA Cup brings together PGA club professionals in the US and Great Britain and Ireland in a matcplay tournament that adopts a Ryder Cup style format.
The US has never been defeated on home soil but GB and I came within half a point of breaking that record in 2007.
The US retained possession of the Llandudno Trophy, awarded to the winning team, with a 17½ to 8½ victory in September 2009 at The Carrick in Loch Lomond.
+The GB and I side for the PGA Cup match is:
Gary BROWN (Ganton).
Simon EDWARDS (Wintermere).
Rob GILES (Greenore).
Chris GILL (Exeter)
Craig GOODFELLOW (Carlisle Driving Range).
Stuart LITTLE (Minchinhampton).
Matt MORRIS (Walmley).
David MORTIMER (Galway)
David SHACKLADY (Mossock Hall)
John WELLS (Cherry Burton).

HANSON MAKES IT FOUR-WAY TIE IN SCOTTISH OPEN ROUND 2

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Sweden's Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson birdied three of the closing seven holes to make it a four-way tie for the lead when the second round of the Barclays Scottish Open was finally able to continue at Castle Stuart Golf Links this morning.
The round had begun at 7.30am on Friday, then was hit by two rain delays later that day and a total wash-out on Saturday.
With the event cut from 72 to 54 holes for the first time in its history, Hanson's 67 put him alongside Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Scots Peter Whiteford and Scott Jamieson.
Luke Donald matched Hanson's round to be one behind, with Spain's Jose Manuel Lara and 51 year old former winner Barry Lane.
Lee Westwood, trying to take the World Number One spot back off Donald, was two further back after a 71, while Colin Montgomerie was alongside him after achieving the 69 target he set himself to keep his hopes alive of grabbing a place in the upcoming Open Championship through a top-five finish.
Montgomerie was in joint 14th spot, but had to be the leading non-exempt player and Jamieson, Lane and Lara all had the same goal.
"I'm trying my best, but it's a long shot now," Montgomerie said. "I have a long way to go and I needed two more rounds to be honest.
"I'll have to play like Luke - no mistakes. I'm throwing in too many errors."
He had three birdies in the nine holes he had to play when the action resumed at 7am, but also bogeyed the 14th.
Donald commented on his round: "I'm in a good position. It took a while, but it's nice to get it done and hopefully we can play another 18 today."
There was more rain in the area, but the course had recovered well from a deluge that even caused a landslide and made holes by the Moray Firth out of bounds to spectators.
