SCOTT HENDERSON IN UNFINISHED PLAY-OFF FOR PLACE IN OPEN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Open Championship Local Final Qualifying in Kent was unfinished last night at three of the four venues and will resume this morning (WED) at Royal Cinque Ports, Littlestone and Rye .
Lengthy delays were caused by thunderstorms in England ’s south-east and only at the Princes did the eliminating competition end before darkness fell.
A total of 72 players at each venue were chasing three places in the field for the Open at Royal St George’s Golf Club next month.
At Princes, Simon Edwards (Windermere), Thomas Shadbolt (Brocket Hall) and Frances McGuirk (Princes) were the qualifiers.
Edwards scored 68-69 for seven-under 137, finishing a shot ahead of Shadbolt (66-73) and McGuirk (68-71).
A shot behind on 140 – only one stroke away from forcing a play-off – were Hayston’s Stephen Gray, Niall Turner (Team Ireland) and New Zealander Michael Campbell, the former US Open champion.
Gray scored 68-72, Turner 69-71 and Campbell 68-72.
Other non-qualifiers at Princes included Whitecraigs amateur Gordon Stevenson who had 73-74 for 147 and joint 28th place.
Nairn Dunbar pro Malcolm Isaacs finished joint 46th with 75-7 for 151 – two shots ahead of Pumpherston amateur Paul Drake who had rounds of 78 and 75 for 153 and a share of 54th place.
John Henry ( Clydebank and District) scored 74-80 for 154 and 57th place.

Scott Henderson (Kings Links), pictured, is involved in an unfinished four-man play-off for two qualifying places at Royal Cinque Ports.
Henderson (69-71), Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex) (66-74), Simon Lilly (Wellingborough) (70-70) and Alex Christie (Tyrells Wood) (72-68) all finished joint second on 140 – one shot behind the definite leading qualifier, Craig Hinton (The Oxfordshire) with rouns of 69 and 70 for five-under-par 139.
Non-qualifiers at Royal Cinque Ports included Cawder tour pro Chris Kelly with a pair of 74s for 148 and a share of 28th place.
Another Scot, Stephen Clark (unattached) shot 77-73 for 150 and a share of 35th place.
Only a handful of players have completed two rounds at Littlestone and the leader in the clubhouse, Guy Woodman ( Stoke Park ) is unlikely to be one of three qualifiers. He had rounds of 71 and 69 for two-under-par 140.
James Ross (Royal Burgess) shot 71 and 73 for 144.
Peter Latimer (St Andrews New) had rounds of 73 and 74 for 147.
Ross Bain (Golf in Dubai ) is one of many who still has to complete a second circuit after returning a first-round 73.
Two qualifiers have been confirmed at Rye – Walker Cup team place contender Tom Lewis (Welwyn Garden City) and Adam Wootton (Oxford Golf Centre). Lewis, a former British boys champion, shot 63-65 for eight-under-par 136 while Wooton scored 63-68 for 131.

A play-off has still to finish beween Mark Laskey (The Shire, London ) (65-68 and Inder Van Weerelt ( Netherlands ) (65-68), who tied for third place on 133. There is room for only one of them in the qualifying process.

Elliot Saltman missed out at Rye on 135. He shot 69 and 66 for 135 which gave him joint seventh place.

Banchory amateur James Byrne failed to make it with scores 67 and 69 for 136 and a share of 13th place.

Kirkhill amateur Paul Shields had scores of 68 and 72 for 140 and joint 26th place.
Steven Mackie ( Dunnikier Park ) finished joint 34th on 142 with scores of 70 and 72.
Lee Harper (Archerfield Links) withdrew after a first-round 72.
