By ROSS DUNCAN SGU Media and Marketing Manager
Dumfries and County’s Greig Marchbank eased to an emphatic four-shot wire-to-wire victory in the SGU Junior Tour’s 72-hole event at Macdonald Cardrona near Peebles. The 16-year-old celebrated his call-up to the Scotland boys' team earlier in the week with an impressive performance on the former European Challenge Tour venue, finishing with a six-under par aggregate of 282, four clear of Liberton’s Anthony Blaney.
The South youngster opened with a two-under par 70 to share the first round lead with Jamie Savage (Cawder) and stretched clear of the pack with an excellent four-under par 68 to hold a five-shot lead going into the final two rounds today.
Marchbank, who reached the last eight of the Scottish Boys Championship at Dunbar, posted his third sub-par round of the weekend with a 69 however Blaney closed the gap to four with a fine 69. Going out in the final group, both players could only manage three-over par 75s as the rain closed in, leaving Marchbank to record his maiden Junior Tour win and further stretch his lead at the top of the SGU Boys Order of Merit standings.
Blaney, a member of the Lothians team who won last weekend’s Dunfermline Building Society Scottish Boys Area Team Championship, continued his fine form to clinch the runners-up spot on 286, two-under par while Mount Ellen’s Eamon Bradley fired a final round 69 – including an eagle two at the par four second - to finish in third place on 289.
Jordan Milne (Elgin), third in the second SGU Junior Tour event at Rowallan Castle last month, secured fourth spot at Cardrona with a four-under par 68 in the final round, which included a haul of six birdies, one clear of Barassie’s Euan Walker whose aggregate of 294 gave his fifth place.
Lee Morgan, also a member of the victorious Lothians boys' team, finished in style with a six-under par 66 – the best round of the weekend – for 295 and a share of sixth place alongside joint first round leader Jamie Savage, who faded with a final round 80.
