DICK TOP SCOT BEHIND WINNER WRIGHT AT WELSH OPEN STROKE

Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle), who played in the recent Walker Cup practice match at Royal Aberdeen, boosted his selection prospects for the September match against the Americans at Balgownie by winning the prestigious Welsh men's open amateur stroke play championship over 72 holes in rough weather at St Pierre, Chepstow.

Two men who did not play in the Walker Cup work-out, Ben Stow (Rushmere) and Ben Loughlrey (Wrag Barn), finished second and third.

Wright was the only man in the field to break par with his 72-hole total - four under par 284 with scores of 71, 72, 70 and 71.

Walker Cup captain Nigel Edwards. who played in four consecutive Walker Cup matches earlier this decade, tied for14th place on 302.
Top Scot was Kingsknowe's Allyn Dick who had a roller-coaster last round of 74 - including a hole

in one - to finish joint ninth on 298. Dick, lower picture, started with a double bogey 7 in his last round and then bogeyed the second ... but at the short third he had a much-needed hole in one to redress the balance!
Out in 38 with a first birdie at the seventh, Allyn came home in 34, thanks to birdies at the 10th, 13th and 14th which lifted him past his fellow Scots and into the top 10.
Second best Scot was Fraserburgh's Kris Nicol on 299 with scores of 73, 78, 754 and 74 for a share of 12th place.
