Latimer shoots a 63 to grab halfway

lead in Sutherland Chalice

Recent winner of the East of Scotland Open golf tournament, Markinch's Peter Latimer (St Andrews New) is hot on the trail of another victory in a Scottish Golf Union 72-hole Order of Merit event.
This time it's the Sutherland Chalice at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.
Peter, who reached the last eight of last year's Scottish amateur championship at Royal Troon and who has spent the last four years playing in US college golf events as a student at Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina, shot a brilliant seven-under-par 63 in the second round to be the halfway leader on three-under-par 137.
On a wet day when the second round was delayed until some of the worst rain-affected greens had been swept clear of excess water, Latimer, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who had seven birdies and not a single bogey, ended it a shot ahead of Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) who had rounds of 70 and 68 for 138.
Forty players with 36-hole tallies of 147 or better qualified for Sunday's final two rounds.

Barclays Scottish Open report, scores

Edoardo Molinari's 63 puts him a shot ahead of Darren Clarke

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Darren Clarke is still looking good to claim the last-but-one place in the Open Championship at St Andrews next week.
But whether he can do it by capturing the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond - and with it take his European Tour earnings through the £15million mark - remains to be seen.
The 41-year-old Ulsterman, who has suddenly this week really ignited a bid for a sixth Ryder Cup cap in October, saw a four-stroke lead turn into a one-stroke deficit in Saturday's high-quality third round. And Clarke now has to go into the closing 18 holes of the £3million event facing not one, but both the Molinari brothers.
Edoardo, the older but less experienced of the two World Cup holders, is the one who leads after four birdies in the last five holes gave him a scintillating eight-under-par 63, only one off Retief Goosen's course record.
The lowest round of the 29-year-old's European Tour career took Molinari to 15 under par.
Clarke, though, added a second successive 67 to his opening 65 to be 14 under as the pair left the best of the rest trailing well behind.
Francesco Molinari, with a golden opportunity to move from ninth to fifth in the Ryder Cup race, shares third spot with Swede Peter Hedblom, but they are a massive seven shots behind Francesco's brother after rounds of 68 and 69 respectively.
There is one Open spot up for grabs at the end and both Molinaris are already in the championship, but Hedblom is not and it goes to the leading non-exempt player in the top five on Sunday night.
Stephen Gallacher is the leading Scot in joint ninth place after a 69 for 209 - the same 54-hole tally as John Daly among others - but he is 11 shots off the pace.
Richie Ramsay had a good third-round 68 for 211 and is lying joint 17th.

Andrew Oldcorn leads by two in Seniors Tour event

Andy lying handy for first Euro Senior Tour victory

From European Senior Tour Press Officer STEVE TODD
Andrew Oldcorn will take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Van Lanschot Senior Open after the Scot played himself into contention to become the seventh maiden winner of the 2010 European Senior Tour season.
The 2001 PGA Championship winner from Edinburgh fired a superb 66 to move to nine under par for the tournament at The Royal Haagsche Golf and Country Club in the Netherlands.
Oldcorn posted seven birdies, and just the one bogey when he three putted the 11th hole, to move clear of Argentine Luis Carbonetti, who carded a 68, and compatriot Gordon Brand Jnr, who is a further stroke back after a 66.
After turning 50 at the end of March, Oldcorn has made a solid start to life on the Senior Tour, finishing as leading European in the US Senior PGA Championship in tied eighth place and posting three other top ten finishes in six appearances.
However Sunday’s final round in The Hague will be the first time he has been in the final group and firmly in contention to capture some silverware.
“I’m delighted with how it went today,” said Oldcorn. “I felt a lot better physically today and I played some good golf, especially on the front nine and holed a couple of 20 foot putts.
“The stability of my round was mainly made on the front nine and I got a bit tired on the back nine with the heat but I’m really proud of the way I finished, grabbing a couple of birdies on the last four holes when I was really tired. That has given me a bit of a margin for tomorrow.”
The three-time European Tour winner admitted he fancied his chances prior to the tournament and is hoping he can see the job through and join Kevin Spurgeon, Boonchu Runagkit, Tom Lehman, Brand Jnr, Marc Farry and David J Russell as first time winners on the Senior Tour in 2010.
“One or two people came up to me at the beginning of the week, before I’d even seen the course, and said it was right up my street and it is,” he said. “The cornerstone of my game over the years has been pretty straight, accurate driving. If I can combine that with decent putting on a course like this I’ll expect to do well and so far that’s what’s happened.
“Being in this position is what I have been striving to get to for the last month or so. My game has been improving each week and I’ve been fortunate that I’ve cut out the mistakes I was making. I’ve put myself in a good position but it’s all about where I am with six holes to play.
“If I’m still there with six holes to play I’ll relish that. I’ve not been in that position for a long time so I’ll be nervous in the morning but I’ll look forward to it.”
Irishman Des Smyth posted eight birdies but blotted his scorecard with a double bogey on the seventh hole - his 16th after starting on the tenth tee - to sign for a 66 and move to finish in a group of five players on four under par.
Former Ryder Cup winning captains Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam are some distance off the pace in a share of 66th and 53rd place after rounds of 79 and 74 respectively.

England are new European men's amateur team champions

England succeeded Scotland as European men's amateur team champions at Osterakers Golf Club, Sweden.
They beat Sweden 4.5 to 2.5 in today's final after losing both the morning foursomes.
The English team put in a brilliant singles performance to win four and halve the remaining tie and pull the fat out of the fire.
The inspiration came from Tommy Fleetwood who beat Jesper Kennegard, a team-mate of James Byrne at Arizona State University, by 2 and 1 in the top singles tie.
Then British boys champion of 2009, Tom Lewis, won a tight one on the 18th green against Nils Floren.
Laurie Canter won comfortably, 6 and 4, against Pontus Widegren and Eddie Peppe4rell was a 4 and 3 winner over David Lingmerth.
Chris Paisley and Henrik Norlander halved their match but whether they played the full 18 holes or stopped because England had a winning lead in the match, is not clear at the time of writing.
Scotland, who failed to qualify for the top grade on their title defence, finished on a low note with "only" 10th ranking.
With James Byrne and Ross Kellett losing the top two singles, Scotland were well beaten, 4-1, by France in the ninth place play-off.
In the European boys' team championship at Klassis Golf Club, Istanbul in Turkey, the Scots finished on a high note with a 4.5 to 0.5 win over Portugal. That earned them a final ranking of 11th in Europe.

Sunday early evening highlight at Lundin Links, Fife

PAUL LAWRIE TO ATTEND OPENING CEREMONY

OF 2010 JUNIOR OPEN

CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RandA
Paul Lawrie, the Scot who lifted the Claret Jug at Carnoustie in 1999, will attend the opening ceremony of the 2010 Junior Open Championship to present players’ badges to each of the 128 competitors. The ceremony will take place at Lundin Golf Club tomorrow, Sunday 11 July, commencing at 6pm.
This year, the Championship has attracted the largest and most internationally diverse entry in the 16-year history of the event. 77 countries will be represented, with 18 nations, including Laos, Lithuania, Papua New Guinea and Uruguay, sending players for the first time.
“It is fantastic that there are so many players of so many nationalities contesting the 2010 Junior Open,” said Lawrie, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for these young people to get a taste of international golf competition, and it will be an honour for me to present each of them with their competitors’ badge.”
The Championship, which counts Rory McIlroy, Paula Creamer, Sergio Garcia, will be held at Lundin Golf Club immediately prior to the 150th Anniversary Open Championship. Lundin has a fine pedigree, having played host to Local Final Qualifying for St Andrews Open Championships from 1978 to 2005.
“It’s an excellent field, a record entry for the Championship, that will have the opportunity to play at a well-known, highly-respected venue, which is in great condition,” said Duncan Weir, The R&A’s Director of Golf Development.
“It is particularly pleasing that we are now seeing players emerge from countries with junior golf development programmes that have been supported financially by The R and A.”
All nations affiliated to The R and A are invited to enter one boy and one girl, under the age of 16, for the biennial event, which is played over three rounds of stroke play.
Play will get underway at 8am on Monday and will conclude on Wednesday. Entry to the course is free.
Following the event, competitors will attend the 150th Anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews.

Scores and stories from the 2010 Junior Open Championship will appear on RandA.org throughout the event.

MICHAEL IS MAIN MAN AT A WET

SUTHERLAND CHALICE

Thornton's Michael Main, beaten finalist in the 2006 Scottish boys' championship, coped best with the miserable, wet conditions for the opening round of this weekend's Scottish Golf Union 72-hole Order of Merit event, the Sutherland Chalice at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.
Main returned a three-under-par 67, four under the CSS, to lead by a shot from four players - US college circuit student Neil Henderson (Glen), Steven Rennie (Drumpellier), Scott Borrowman (Dollar) and Stuart Smith (Dalmahoy).
Stirling University student James White (Lundin), who beat Main in that 2006 Scottish boys' final, returned a 70.
Last year's winner of the Sutherland Chalice, Paul O'Hara, is now a professional.
Flooded greens delayed the start of the second round.

A flawless round of 65 moved McLeary into a share of 11th place on eight under par, one shot ahead of McArthur, whose round of 66 contained just the one bogey at the fifth hole. Both men have one Challenge Tour title to their name and have a great chance of doubling their tally, with four players tied for the lead on ten under par.
McLeary, winner of the 2009 Scottish Hydro Challenge, was just happy to return to form after missing the cut in his last two tournaments.
He said: “I made three doubles over the first two days, and with nine holes to play yesterday, I was struggling to make the cut. But I picked up a couple of shots coming home yesterday, then today was even better still and I’m right back in the tournament. If I can shoot another 65 tomorrow, I won’t be too far away from winning the tournament! There are plenty of birdie chances out there, so if I can take my fair share I won’t be too far away. But whatever happens, I’m happy to be finding some form again.”
Joint leader Oscar Floren of Sweden will bid to end his drought on Sunday, but he has Challenge Tour champions Charlie Ford and Thorbjrn Olesen breathing down his neck.
A level par round of 71 for Floren, who is seeking his maiden title since turning professional in 2007, saw the Swede relinquish his overnight advantage, as he was joined on ten under par by Denmark’s Olesen, Austrian Florian Praegant – who shot a stunning round of 64 – and home hope Tony Raillard.
Olesen, who captured his maiden Challenge Tour title at The Princess last week, is bidding to become the first player to claim back-to-back victories this season.
His fellow Challenge Tour debutant Ford, winner of the Turkish Airlines Challenge presented by Carya Golf Club earlier in the season, is in a group of players tied for fifth place on nine under par. Ford opened with a bogey and, despite rallying with birdies at the third and fifth holes, could only manage a level par round of 71.
He said: “I never really got anything going all day. A lot of drives seem to roll just off the fairway and into the semi-rough, and from there you can’t really afford to be too aggressive, because you’re liable to get a flyer. But tomorrow’s another day, and hopefully I can get another win on the board. Obviously I’ll be drawing on my experience in Turkey, and hopefully it’ll stand me in good stead.
“It was quite a similar situation, in that it was a fairly packed leaderboard going into the final round. And obviously Oscar was up there too, so hopefully that’s another good sign. If I can shoot a 63 like he did on the final day, I think there’s probably a fair chance that I’ll win!”
Floren is hoping to turn the tables on Ford tomorrow, when the temperatures at Golf du Gouverneur in Lyon, France, are again expected to top 30 degrees.
He said: “Nothing went right for me on the greens today, but the good news is that I’m still right in contention. Sometimes things don’t go your way out on the course, and today was just one of those days. My only birdies were with two putts at the par fives – none of my other birdie putts even came close to the hole really.
“I would’ve expected to be at least two or three shots off the lead after a 71, so I’m actually pretty pleased I’m still tied at the top. If I can get the putter going again tomorrow, then I’ll have a chance. I’ve already finished second once this season – now I feel ready to win. Hopefully it’ll be my day.”
