MICHAEL IS MAIN MAN AT A WET
SUTHERLAND CHALICE
Thornton's Michael Main, beaten finalist in the 2006 Scottish boys' championship, coped best with the miserable, wet conditions for the opening round of this weekend's Scottish Golf Union 72-hole Order of Merit event, the Sutherland Chalice at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.
Main returned a three-under-par 67, four under the CSS, to lead by a shot from four players - US college circuit student Neil Henderson (Glen), Steven Rennie (Drumpellier), Scott Borrowman (Dollar) and Stuart Smith (Dalmahoy).
Stirling University student James White (Lundin), who beat Main in that 2006 Scottish boys' final, returned a 70.
Last year's winner of the Sutherland Chalice, Paul O'Hara, is now a professional.
Flooded greens delayed the start of the second round.
