Bad day at the office for Russell Knox in North Carolina

Russell Knox from Inverness had an uncharacteristic poor round of 74 to drop from joint 14th to joint 30th after two rounds of this weekend's Hooters Tour event at Rock Barn Golf & Spa at Conover, North Carolina.
Florida-based Knox, who had a 70 in the first round over the par-72, 7180yd course, slumped to a triple bogey 6 at the shot third and had further bogeys at the 11th and 16th. He did birdie the seventh, eighth and 18th, not enough to offset the mistakes.
With two or three players having to finish their second rounds on Saturday morning - including David Skinns from Lincoln, a former US college circuit player, Yohann Benson from Montreal leads the field with 67 and 68 for 135 - three shots ahead of Will Wilcox from Alabama with scores of 73 and 65.

SANDY LYLE LONE SCOT IN AUGUSTA FIELD

England's eight hopefuls to

head for Masters

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
While Scotland has only Sandy Lyle flying the flag and Wales just fellow 52-year-old Ian Woosnam, England has never sent a stronger contingent to the Masters.
Trying to emulate Sir Nick Faldo - winner of the title in 1989, 1990 and 1996 - are an eight-strong band of hopefuls who all know that success in the majors will take their careers to a new level.
Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Luke Donald have all won in the USA, Ross Fisher and Simon Dyson have tasted victory in other parts of the world, Oliver Wilson has a Ryder Cup cap and young Chris Wood has twice shone at the Open.
But at the moment they do not have a major among them.
Poulter said after his World Match Play triumph in February: "It's about time the guys that have put themselves in positions four, five and six in the world (he was between Westwood and Casey at the time) should step up to the plate and hopefully deliver on that."
Westwood. pictured, has come third in the last two majors and bogeying the last hole in the Open last July to lose by one really hurt.
"After Turnberry I was about as disappointed as I've ever been in my career I think," he said.
"But you've got to get over that sooner or later and turn finishing third in a major championship into positives."
The way he ran away with the Dubai World Championship in November - and with it win a second European Tour money list crown - meant it was a shame there was not a major to play straight after.
But the Worksop 36-year-old added: "When it comes around I will not have forgotten today. It will be crystal clear in my mind, just like the Open was.
"Those sort of memories continued to hang around for a while."
Just nine years ago Westwood was the only English golfer in the world's top 100 - Faldo was next highest at 107th.
Casey thinks that the current crop are products of the success of Europe's golden era in the 1980s and 1990s.
"My take on it is that it's the result of the great European golf that I was watching when I was a kid," he commented.
"Faldo, Seve, Woosnam, Langer, Lyle, Monty, Olazabal - those are the guys that were my golfing heroes.
"They got me interested in the game. I got to see them live and it's just taken however long for us to sort of hone our skills.
"Overnight success always takes 10-20 years!"

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR

Local hero Ali leads Kenya Open by two shots

By PAUL SYMES, Challenge Tour Press Officer
The English duo of Robert Dinwiddie and Oliver Fisher played themselves into contention on day two of the Kenya Open, but both were upstaged by local hero Ali Kimani.
Kimani, cheered on by a partisan crowd at Nairobi’s Muthaiga Golf Club, played the round of his life – a 65 featuring eight birdies – to move to seven under par, two strokes clear of Dinwiddie, Fisher and Germany’s Bernd Ritthammer.
In his four visits to the Kenya Open since turning professional in 2005 Kimani, who was taken under his wing by Markus Brier’s caddy Max Zechmann when he decided to try his luck on the Alps Tour, has only made the cut once, in 2008.
But the 26 year old is now setting his sights on going one better than his compatriot Jacob Okello, who at the 1998 Kenya Open lost out in a play-off to Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez.
Looking to prevent a first home victory since the €190,000 event joined the Challenge Tour Schedule in 1991 is Dinwiddie, who was aided by a hot putter. The highlight of his round came at the 15th hole, where he sunk a birdie putt from 35 feet.
He said: “It was another pleasing day, particularly on the greens, although I didn’t get off to the best of starts with a double bogey at the fourth. I got distracted on the tee and should’ve backed off, but ended up playing the shot and hit it way right. So I paid the penalty, but luckily I was able to make amends with some birdies on the back nine. The long putt on the 15th was a bonus, and it’s always nice to finish with a birdie, which puts me in a good position going into the weekend.”
Dinwiddie’s compatriot Fisher, making his Challenge Tour debut, is also on the comeback trail after losing his playing privileges on The European Tour last season, but he showed his class with a flawless round of 66.
The youngster from Essex notched five unanswered birdies at Muthaiga Golf Club’s newly-renovated course, and will now attempt capture a maiden title since turning professional in 2006.
The 21 year old got his round going with a birdie on the fourth hole following a good chip and his second birdie of the day came courtesy of a 10-foot putt at the ninth hole, before adding another three after the turn to complete a satisfying morning’s work.
He said: “It’s my first Challenge Tour event, and so far I’m enjoying it. I already know a few of the guys out here from playing amateur golf with them, so it’s always nice to see a familiar face. I don’t know how the season will pan out – hopefully I’ll win a couple of times and get back onto the main Tour, but it might take a little longer than that. All I can do is play to the best of my ability, shoot as low as possible and hope it gets me the right results. The belief’s starting to come back now, and if I can keep shooting low scores, obviously the confidence will keep building.”
Ritthammer, who won the EPD Tour order of Merit last season, got off to a flying start with an eagle at his first hole, the tenth. The German then collected three birdies and two bogeys to sign for a round of 68 which saw him join Dinwiddie and Fisher in a three-way tie for fifth, with sixth players one shot back on four under par.
Four Scots made the cut with nothing to spare on 143 - Lloyd Saltman (73-70), Scott Jamieson (72-71), Callum Macaulay (67-76) and Jamie McLeary (70-73).
Out of the weekend action are compatriots Jack Doherty (73 for 145) and Alan McLean (72 for 146).

NEWS RELEASE
Conditions on Day 2 saw a mixture of heavy rain and high winds. Challenge Tour player Greig Hutcheon from Banchory produced the round of the day with a brilliant, three under par 69. This was all the better as he played his first three holes in two over par.
Playing partners Chris Kelly and Stephen Gray admitted it was one of the most impressive rounds they had seen in years, especially in the conditions.
The next event will take place at Hilton Park, Glasgow on April 28th and 29th, when lady professionals are expected to make their debuts on the tour, competing against each other, not against the men.

EUROPEAN TOUR'S ANDALUCIA OPEN

Hutsby and Oosthuizen are joint

halfway leaders: Lawrie, Whiteford

share fourth place, 3 shots behind

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Sam Hutsby took a giant step forward in his European Tour career with a brilliant seven under par 63 at the Open de Andalucia de Golf in Malaga to hold the halfway lead with Louis Oosthuizen.
The 21 year old from Hampshire, ranked 491st in the world, shares the halfway lead on ten under par with South African Oosthuizen, runner-up to Welshman Rhys Davies in Morocco last Sunday.
Hutsby could easily have been preparing for the Masters Tournament. He reached the final of the British Amateur last June before losing to 16 year old Italian Matteo Manassero, who in two weeks' time will become the youngest player ever to appear at Augusta.
Hutsby would have had to stay amateur to take up that opportunity if he had won that day, but instead he turned professional after the Walker Cup in September and finished second at The European Tour Qualifying School only two months later.
Now he goes into the weekend alongside Oosthuizen, who matched his 63 and needs to win on Sunday to have a chance of climbing into the world's top 50 in time for the Masters Tournament. Hutsby said: "I woke up quite a few times in the night, I have a sore throat and am really bunged up, but that round has made me feel better."
It matched the new Parador de Málaga Golf course record set earlier in the day by fellow European Tour rookie James Morrison - his effort contained a mere 19 putts - but less than an hour later Paul Waring, another of the English contingent, lowered the mark by one.
Hutsby's 63 was achieved with that very number on his ball, wedges and bag.
That had been stamped on because it was the low round of his career, so it was rather convenient for the manufacturers that he did not chip in on the last.
Oosthuizen, four times a runner-up on The European Tour without ever winning, even had a double bogey six in his round, but there was also an eagle and seven birdies.
Overnight joint-leader Søren Kjeldsen sits third on eight under after a 67, one ahead of a group of five players tied on seven under.
Former Open Champion Paul Lawrie from Aberdeen, his fellow Scot Peter Whiteford (pictured above) from Kirkcaldy, The Netherlands’ Robert Jan Derksen, England’s Richard Finch and Spaniard Gabriel Canizares all share fourth. Among those who failed to beat the cut on level par 140 better was last Sunday's winner, Rhys Davies with 70 and 73 for 143.
Scots out of the weekend action are Scott Drummond and Steven O'Hara, both missing out by a shot on 141, Andrew McArthur on 143 and Andrew Coltart 144.

Torrance, Longmuir three behind in South Africa

REPORT BY STEVE TODD, European Seniors Tour Press Officer
Scotland’s Sam Torrance is three shots behind new European Senior Tour sensation Boonchu Ruangkit after the first round of the inaugural Berenberg Bank Masters in South Africa.
Former Ryder Cup Captain Torrance and fellow Scot Bill Longmuir both opened with one under par rounds of 72 at The Links at Fancourt to lie amongst ten players in a share of sixth place.
Torrance was two over par after just four holes but hit back with five birdies. However bogeys on two of the three par-5s on the way in, including Fancourt’s difficult closing hole, cost him two shots.
Despite that, the 2009 Senior Tour No 1, who has two top five finishes in three appearances so far this season, was satisfied with his start to the €500,000 event.
“I played lovely but had two unplayables near the end on the two par fives and made six on both,” said the 56 year old from Ayrshire. “Apart from that I played beautifully. It’s a very fair course but it’s just very difficult. I’ve been slow starting for a while so it’s good to be up there from the start.”
Fellow Scots Ross Drummond and Martin Gray are a further shot back on level par but it is the remarkable Ruangkit’s who is top of the leaderboard following a flawless four under par 69.
The Thai star, who is chasing his third consecutive victory, has a one stroke advantage over American Jerry Bruner and Italian Giuseppe Cali, meaning he has now lead the field after each of the last seven rounds of Senior Tour competition– a new record.
Ruangkit’s wire-to-wire debut victory in The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum was followed by a record breaking wire-to-wire win on home soil in the Chang Thailand Senior Masters presented by ISPS, where he posted a record low total of 21 under par 195 and a record winning margin of 11 strokes.
The 53 year old, who is known as ‘The Godfather of Asian Golf’, has carried forward that form to The Links at Fancourt, where the Senior Tour is making its first trip to South Africa.
“I’m very happy today because I was on the fairway on nearly every hole and you can play well from there,” said Ruangkit, the current Order of Merit leader. “Today I played some good golf but I know it might be tough tomorrow as it is going to be windy.
“My confidence is high but it wasn’t when I saw this golf course on the first day! The greens slope a lot and this doesn’t suit my game. I’ve had to adjust my game a lot.”

North-east Alliance foursomes finals
-
Inchmarlo Golf Resort tour pro Paul Cormack, winner of the North-east Alliance championship last week, failed to pull off the winter circuit's end-of-season double.
He and amateur partner Mike Jenkins, a Duff House Royal Senior member, lost by 2 and 1 to Aboyne assistant Keil Beveridge and Murcar Links amateur Kyle Nelson in today's (Friday) final of the North-east Alliance pro-am foursomes at Murcar Links.
Beveridge, boyfriend of Scotland amateur international player Laura Murray (Alford), did not qualify for the foursomes championship but was called into action on Thursday morning as a substitute for James Mooney (Kingscliffe). At the end of two days, he had won himself an unexpected windfall of £80.
All square after losing the 15th, Beveridge and Nelson regained a winning lead by taking the 16th and 17th holes for a 2 and 1 victory, achieved with mainly par figures. They collected the Evening Express Shield.
Nelson's local knowledge was a key factor, particularly in first and second-round wins in Thursday's foggy conditions.
In the all-amateur handicap foursomes, Charles Cassie (Nigg Bay) (5) and Nigel Parker (Murcar Links) (9) beat Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) (+2) and Neil Chisholm (Kemnay) (9) by 4 and 2 in the final of The Press and Journal Shield.
Cassie and Parker received four strokes.
All square after 12 holes, Cassie and Parker, who was suffering from a groin strain, made the most of receiving a stroke to win the 13th, thanks to a great three-wood by Cassie. They then birdied the 14th to double their advantage and kept up the winning roll to win the 15th - another excellent approach shot by Cassie - and 16th
Results of finals:
SCRATCH - Semi-finals - Final - Keil Beveridge (Aboyne) & Kyle Nelson (Murcar Links) bt Paul Cormack (Inchmarlo) and Mike Jenkins (Duff House Royal) 2 and 1.
HANDICAP
Final - Charles Cassie NIgg Bay) (5) & Nigel Parker (Murcar Links) (9) bt Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) (+2) & Neil Chisholm (Kemnay) (9) 4 and 2.

John Riegger leads Louisiana Open with a 66

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
BROUSSARD, Louisiana: John Riegger rolled in a 10ft birdie putt as darkness fell to break an eight-way tie for the opening-round lead in the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, the initial domestic stop on the 2010 United States Nationwide Tour schedule.
Riegger polished off a 5-under 66 at the Le Triomphe Country Club minutes after play was suspended for the day and moved in front of seven others in the weather-delayed first round.
Vance Veazey, Garth Mulroy, Luke List, Jason Enloe and Monday qualifier Patrick Grady all posted 4-under 67s and are tied for second place.
The tour's return to the United States was delayed 70 minutes at daybreak because of rain and thunderstorms. Failing to start on time resulted in 20 players failing to finish their rounds.
Aron Price is 4 under and will return to putt out on the final hole in the morning, while Casey Clendenon is 4 under with three holes to go
.
Scott Gutschewski, Tag Ridings, Kevin Kisner, Charles Warren and Jon Mills are tied at 3-under 68 and holding a share of ninth place.
Riegger, 46, capped off a seven-birdie effort shortly after the horn was sounded to suspend play at 7:27 p.m. His 3-iron from 215 yards settled just past the pin and gave him a chance to break the logjam that formed at minus-4.
"I couldn't even see my second shot land," said Riegger, who has undergone Lasik surgery three times, most recently in 2006. "I thought it was in the bunker. Nobody clapped and when I got up there and saw it was close, I was surprised. To make that putt, in low-light conditions was just a bonus."
It's all been a bonus to this point for Riegger, who had major surgery in December to repair ligament damage and a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
"I didn't know if I was going to play again," he said. "I gave myself a pretty good attitude adjustment because I didn't know if I'd be able to play golf again."
So far, so good to open the year for Riegger, who tied for 29th at the Panama Claro Championship and tied for sixth at the Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open the following week.
It was also a pretty good day to Veazey, who struggled at time to hit eight fairways and 13 greens in regulation while posting the first of the 67s that made it to the leaderboard.
"There's only one reason I shot 4 under today -- the putter," said Veazey. "I need to hit the ball much better the next three days. I struggled with my ball-striking pretty bad today. I made four or five putts that were the difference in my score."
One of those putts was racing, 60-foot birdie from off the green at the par-5 seventh.
"I was just hoping to get that up-and-down and it went in the hole," he said. "That could have been a two-shot swing there.I feel like I just as easily could have shot 1 over par. Golf is always interesting."
It's been an interesting couple of weeks for Grady, who turned 23 on St. Patrick's Day. The University of Colorado All-America finished at 19 under par to win a mini-tour event 90 miles away in Alexandria, La., last week. He then carded a 64 in the Monday qualifier to get into this tournament, his first career start on the Nationwide Tour.
"It's different today. It's a Nationwide event and I got a little nervous out there," said the 2009 CU grad. "It's a little nerve-wracking at first but you try to lie to yourself that it's just golf. That's the game plan for the rest of the week -- just lying to yourself."

THE KITTOCKS RE-OPENS AT

FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS
The Kittocks course at Fairmont St Andrews re-opened last weekend after a being included in a £17m refurbishment at the five-star resort.
The course – formerly known as The Devlin after its eponymous designer – now includes two holes from The Torrance course: the 17th and 18th, setting up one of the finest series of closing holes in the game.
Stewart Elder, golf sales manager for Fairmont St Andrews, said: “After an innocent start, the fifth hole begins a real roller-coaster ride through a spectacular landscape – it’s even been said that the finishing holes start on the fifth, giving The Kittocks’ golf’s longest finish.”
When the course was originally designed, Devlin was assisted by legends Gene Sarazen and Sam Torrance. And with the additional input of Gary Stephenson recently, the course is now arguably the most stunning at the Home of Golf.
The white water of St Andrews Bay crashes on to the historic seashore and the often snow-covered Grampian Mountains dominate the distant horizon beyond Dundee and Carnoustie.
The entire right side of the 17th is now bordered by a 100ft cliff, falling into the sea. The left is a mixture of mounds, hazards, gorse, fescue and bunkers, while in the distance behind the green, the Old Town of St Andrews with its many spires beckons.
Green fees at The Kittocks start at £40 per person with tee-time rates from £99.

Holmes shares Bay Hill lead with Davis Love

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
American J B Holmes gave his chances of securing a place at the Masters a boost by taking a share of the lead after the opening round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.
Holmes needs a top-four finish in Florida if he is to have any chance of securing himself a place inside the world's top 50 and an invite to the first major of the year and he got off to the best possible start with a six-under-par round of 66.
The 27-year-old birdied his first hole, the 10th, and claimed an eagle at the par-five 12th. He produced further birdies at the fifth, sixth and ninth as he completed a flawless round.
He was joined at the top of the leaderboard by fellow American Davis Love III, who shot seven birdies and an eagle on the way to his 66.

McGowan opts against Masters bid

Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Canada's Mike Weir headed the chasing pack on five under with both players registering seven birdies.
Next up was a group of four players at four under including Ernie Els and Kevin Streelman, Kevin Na and Robert Allenby.
While Holmes was setting the pace it was not proving to be such a promising opening day for some other players in need of results if they are to head down Magnolia Drive in a couple of weeks' time.
England's Justin Rose lay three over par after double bogeying at the 13th, with the 29-year-old requiring a top-four finish to have any chance to reaching the top 50.
Canada's Stephen Ames, who needs a top-five placing, was one over after his opening 18 holes while Bubba Watson was four over as he goes in search of a top-two finish.
Korea's KJ Choi, who needs to finish in the top 55 to keep his Masters hopes alive, was tied for 31st at one under. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell was the top British contender also at one under par while European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie was at level par with fellow Glasgow's Martin Laird back on two over.
