WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUE GETS UNDERWAY

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
Renfrewshire Golf Union’s Youth and “A” Teams got started on their West of Scotland campaigns with pleasing results. Both teams are reigning champions and keen to ensure that the trophies do not have to be returned.
The Youth Team travelled to a wet and windy Falkirk Tryst to do battle with Stirlingshire. Good wins from the Grant brothers – Darren and Jordan from Renfrew – and Paisley’s Alex Ferguson and Fraser Lauder were more than cancelled out by five wins for the Stirlingshire team leaving young Alasdair MacDougall to salvage a draw.
Alasdair has recently been rewarded for his fine form this season with a place in the Scotland under 16s side to face England at Dinsdale Spa Golf Club next month and he again came through with a fine 2 and 1 win over Glenbervie’s Calum Bissett and a valuable away draw.
The “A” team were home to Stirlingshire at Caldwell Golf Club. This was Ronnie Clark’s first match as playing captain of the team. In the first game, Gordon Stevenson from Whitecraigs was up against Graeme Robertson who has had a great season – 4th in the Scottish Amateur and 9th in the Order of Merit. Gordon won 3 and 2 and set the standard for the rest of the team. Renfrew’s Michael Campbell also had a tough game against Bobby Rushford, the 2006 bronze medallist at the Scottish Amateur. Michael’s power and excellent touch around the greens resulted in a convincing 5 and 3 victory. Captain Clark kept the momentum going with another 5 and 3 win. These victories inspired the team and the final result was 7 ½ to 2 ½.
Full results were:
Gordon Stevenson (Whitecraigs) bt Graeme Roberston (Glenbervie) 3 and 2.
