SAM TORRANCE HEADS FAIRMONT FIELD

NEWS RELEASE
A strong field led by Sam Torrance will be heading to Fairmont St Andrews for the 2010 Cleveland/Srixon Scottish Senior Open from August 20-22.
Torrance hopes to make home advantage count when he tees it up later this month, and the former Ryder Cup captain can look forward to competing at the highest level on the links golf course he helped shape himself.
With an increased prize fund of £250,000 the event is sure to have a big say in the eventual winner of the 2010 European Senior Tour Order of Merit and another former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam is also among the big names signed up to compete.
Woosnam is not the only player with connections to golf’s biggest team event: a host of former Ryder Cup stars will be battling it out on the five-star resort’s Torrance course including Costantino Rocca, David Smyth, Eamonn Darcy and Antonio Garrido.
The Cleveland/Srixon Scottish Senior Open is one of the longest-running events on the Senior Tour and organisers are hoping for another dramatic finish after Glenn Ralph secured the 2009 title by finishing one stroke clear of fellow-Englishman Bob Cameron and Argentine Luis Carbonetti to cap a remarkable comeback from a broken ankle.
Charles Head, general manager of Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the cream of the Senior Tour back for a second year and are looking forward to another fantastic event.
“It is unbelievable to be able to watch so many legends of the game competing in these events and when you see some of the shots they play you wonder why they’re not still contesting the Majors.
“We’ve invested a lot in the resort and the courses in the last few years and getting prestigious events like this is the reason why. I can’t wait to welcome the players and fans to Fairmont St Andrews and to get the action underway.”
Fairmont St Andrews boasts two first-class 18-hole layouts in the Torrance and Kittocks courses. Both have benefited as part of a £17m redevelopment the luxury resort has recently undergone, which also saw improvements to the lavish spa complex and five-star hotel.
