Standard Life Leven Gold Medal report, final totals

SCOTT LARKIN WINS BY FOUR STROKES

FROM MARK HILLSON

Royal Aberdeen's Scott Larkin, from the same Banchory "stable" as James Byrne, won his first SGU 72-hole Order of Merit today (Sunday) when he had four shots to spare at the end of the Standard Life Leven Gold Medal.
Larkin, who came home  a better player after four years on the American college circuit, took the lead at the halfway stage over the Fife links with rounds of 67 and 70 and held Craigielaw's Mark Hillson, the only Scot to reach the last eight of the British amateur championship last year, at bay over Sunday's final two rounds.
Larkin signed off with 65 and 70 over the par-71 course to win the prestigious Gold Medal with a 15 under par total of 269 while Hillson had a 66 and 72 on Sunday  claim the silver.
For Larkin it was the second time this summer he had been in contention to win a 72-hole. In the Cameron Corbett Vase at Haggs Castle, he tied for victory after four rounds and then lost at the second hole of a play-off. This time, Scott won with something to spare.
Twice past Scottish boys match-play runner-up Paul Shields (KirkhillP) and Edinburgh's James Ross (Royal Burgess) each earned a bronze medal, sharing third place on 276.
+The Leven Golfing Society computer had a mental breakdown over the third and fourth rounds and the totals which we displayed on Sunday evening were later proved to be wrong in that the totals were right but the sequence of scores had been messed about by the computer. We now have the correct sequence as well as the correct totals below:
