Knox lying second with a round to go in

Hooters' Tour Dothan Classic

Florida-based Scot Russell Knox put himself in line for a big cheque with a third-round of seven under par 65 in the Hooters Tour's Dothan Classic at Highland Oaks, Dothan in Alabama.
Knox had an eagle at the 16th and birdies at the first, second, fourth, ninth, 14th and 18th in halves of 33 and 32. He had one bogey, at the eighth.
The Inverness-born player, who stayed on in the United States after four successful years on the US college golf circuit as a student at Jacksonville University, Florida, is lying in second place with 18 holes to go.
Knox has scored 69, 71 and 65 for 11-under-par 205.
He is three shots behind leader Jim Renner who has shot 66, 70 and 66 for 14-under-par 202.
Knox could also come under pressure from behind as third-placed Will Wilcox is only one shot behind him after a 69 for 206 and fourth-placed Michael Lavery is on 207 after a third-round 72.

SENIORS TOUR REPORT

Late slips a blow to Sam Torrance

hopes of top-four finish at Woburn

Ian Woosnam reignited his Senior Tour Order of Merit challenge with a three under par 69 in the second round of the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters at Woburn today but will have to make up eight strokes on leader Peter Senior if he is to claim his second title of the season.
The Welshman, who needs a top ten to regain pole position in the race to finish Number One, lies joint 11th on level par going into the final round but while topping the Order of Merit is within reach, catching Senior will take something extraordinary.
Senior, playing only his second event since turning 50, birdied the last for a five under par 67 to pull four clear of his closest challenger, Zimbabwe’s Tony Johnstone, and after a career that includes 26 titles around the world, now looks odds on to claim his first title on the Senior Tour.
“In 30 years of playing I have never lost the love for this game and I am just excited to competing again,” said Senior. “I have been waiting a long time to get out there and play competitive golf and I am looking forward to having a run at it.”
Senior picked up five birdies in a flawless round and while he finished strongly with a birdie on the last, playing partner Johnstone slipped up with two dropped shots to finish to gift Senior a sizeable lead.
Woosnam, meanwhile, birdied three of his opening five holes and got himself into red figures with a fourth birdie of the day on the 11th. His only error came on the 16th, when he drove into the fairway trap.
“I played really well today but couldn’t read the greens,” he said. “It could have been a very low score but the greens, while they are very good, are also difficult to read. I had a lot of good chances and it has got me back in there.”
Woosnam also reverted back to his old clubs after trying a new set in the first round. The move was prompted by the need to “break in” some new irons with the new groove ruling coming into force next year, but after an opening 75 he decided to stick with his existing irons for a little longer.
The battle to finish No 1 is heading towards a straight fight between Woosnam and Sam Torrance and the Scot, who needs to finish in the top four to move to the front, shot a second round 74 to fall back to one over par.
One under for the round with five to play, Torrance’s hopes were dealt a blow with a double bogey on the 14th and then another dropped shot on the 16th to slip back to joint 16th place.

Rhys Davies shoots a 65 to share lead

with Steven Jeppesen in Canaries

By RODDY WILLIAMS of the European Tour Press Staff
Former Walker Cup Welshman Rhys Davies surged into a share of the lead in the Fred Olsen Challenge de España as he looks to win his second Challenge Tour title of the season.
Davies fired a brilliant six under par 65 at Tecina Golf on the spectacular island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands to draw level with halfway leader Steven Jeppesen on 13 under par.
A second victory for the Welshman, who turned pro after the 2007 Walker Cup match at Royal Co Down, after his previous success in the SWALEC Wales Challenge earlier in the summer would consolidate his position on the Challenge Tour Rankings as he strives to join the elite on The European Tour.
Five birdies in the space of seven holes on the front nine got him moving and two more followed on the back half before he bogeyed the last to tie Jeppesen.
“It was a good day,” said Davies. “I got off to a good start making two birdies when it didn't look like I was making them, then I made three birdies in a row that gave me lots of confidence.
“I played a lot better today, hit some solid shots and holed key putts. I put the ball in the right places which is very important because the greens can be very tricky.”
As for his chances in the final round, he said: “I'd love to win again. It's still a long way to go and there are a few players out there, but I will put my head down and definitely I'm looking forward competing again at the top of the board.”
Jeppeson endured a rollercoaster of a round with an eagle, two birdies and five bogeys on his way to a one over 72 but it was good enough to keep him in a share of the lead.
The 25 year old has finished runner-up four times on the Challenge Tour and is looking to finally shed his bridesmaid tag.
The Spanish pair of Luis Claverie and Jesus Maria Arruti are both well placed to challenge for a home victory as they lie in the group on 12 under par and only one behind the leaders. Claverie matched Davies’ round of 65 while Arruti shot a 71. Welshman Stuart Manley and Dane Mark F Hastrup are also on 12 under par.

Arnott has an inward half of 29,

but he's not one of leading trio

Hayston professional Stephen Gray, the last man to finish, joined Gareth Wright (West Linton) and David Orr (East Renfrewshire) in a three-way share of the halfway lead at the Tartan Tour's Kerr Investments Classic 36-hole pro-am at Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club today.
All three shot five-under-par 63s but lead by only one shot from a bunch of five of 64, James McKinnon (Irvine), Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs), Edward Thomson (Senit Associates), Lee Harper (Archerfield Links) and Greig Hutcheon (Banchory).
Gray had bogey free halves of 32 and 31 with birdies at the second, third, fifth, 12th and 17th.
Orr also kept a blemish off his scorecard with birdies at the first, second, fifth, sixth and 16th in halves of 31 and 32.
Wright, a Welsh international in his amateur days, did have one bogey - at the 15th - but he compensated with an eagle 3 at the 546yd fifth and birdies at the sixth, ninth,14th and 18th in halves of 31 and 32.
The top three did not claim all the scoring honours - Robert Arnott had an inward half of 29 in his 64. After an outward half of 35, he had birdies at the 13th, 16th, 17th and 18th for a four-under-par inward half.

Swede dreams for Alexander
Noren as he leads by two

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Alexander Noren leads with a round to play at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland - and how Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy wish they could have putted like the 27-year-old Swede.
Noren, seeking his first European Tour title, produced a sparkling 63 to move two ahead of South African Charl Schwartzel on 15 under par.
But McIlroy, needing to win to go to the top of the Tour money list, had 33 putts in a 70 which left him 10 adrift in 34th place. Westwood, with ambitions of finishing the season as number one as well, fared even worse. He three-putted the 14th, four-putted the 15th - both for bogey 6s - and then spun his approach to the last into the water.
That led to another dropped shot, an inward 40 and a 73 which sent him tumbling to 53rd place on only two under. These were not the starts to the European Ryder Cup points race they were hoping for.

===================
In stark contrast, 27-year-old Noren could hardly miss over the closing stretch. He was three behind Schwartzel on the 15th tee but sank a seven-foot eagle putt there and then holed from 15 feet at the short 16th and 10 feet on the final green.
"I played pretty much the same as yesterday but was seven shots different, and that was pretty much seven putts different," he said.
"The greens are good, but as soon as you start missing you start forcing them. Today I was calmer and 'letting it happen' - as the mental coaches would say."
The former Oklahoma State University student is only 88th on the 'Race to Dubai' standings, but that is partly explained by two injury lay-offs - first his wrist and then his knee while out running.
Schwartzel shot 65 but was heading for something even better before he went from a greenside bunker into the trees on the 516-yard 15th and took six.
Welshman Bradley Dredge, winner in 2006 and desperate to play against the Americans on home soil at Celtic Manor next October, is three behind in third place following a 68.
