US gain winning 14-6 lead in Walker Cup

The United States were assured of a third straight Walker Cup victory today when they claimed three early singles matches for an insurmountable 14-6 lead over Great Britain and Ireland at Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania.
Americans Ricky Fowler and Peter Uihlein completed the weekend unbeaten in four matches, and Cameron Tringale won in an 8-and-6 romp in Sunday singles. Six matches were still being played.
The U.S. team needed two points in the afternoon singles to retain the cup and 2 1/2 to win the championship after going 3-1 in the morning's alternate-shot matches that provided an 11-5 advantage.
Scotland's Gavin Dear, in the first singles pairing, tried to kickstart a GB&I comeback, posting a 3 and 2 victory over Brian Harman.
