Deeside boy Jack Scott wins Niagara Cup
HISTORIC WIN BY NORTH IN SCOTTISH
BOYS AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
North District have won the Scottish boys' area team golf championship for the first time since the tournament started in 1978.
Represented by Kyle Godsman (Hopeman), Rodger Clarke (Moray), Calum Stewart (Brora) and Gavin Hay (Grantown-on-Spey), the North lads pipped Ayrshire in a "photo-finish" for the title at the Ballumbie Castle course, to the north of Dundee.
North and Ayrshire both finished on the 366 mark. Ayrshire had shared the lunchtime foursomes lead with Perth & Kinross on 148.
But North's singles total of 214 compared with Ayrshire's 218 saw them level at the end of the day on 366, two shots ahead of defending champions Lothians who were bidding to win the championship for a ninth time.
The tie-breaker between North and Ayrshire was the score of the fourth member of their team in the afternoon singles. North's Gavin Hay scored 77 to Ayrshire's Andrew Wright's 84.
Third-placed Lothians (368) were represented by Grant Forrest, Chris Low, Tom Blennerhassett and Stuart Boyle. They scored 151 in the foursomes and 217 in the singles.
North-east, whose team was made up of Chris Robb, Jack Scott, Ryan Bain and Fraser Clarke, finished a creditable fourth on 370 (foursomes 154, singles 216) and they had the distincition of providing the winner of the Niagara Cup which goes to the best individual singles performance.
Again it was the tighest of finishes, requiring a tie-breaker. Jack Scott (Deeside) and Renfrewshire's Andrew McLachlan (Bonnyton) topped the individual leaderboard jointly on the two-under-par 67 mark.

The last North-east player to win the Niagara Cup is believed to be Craig Cassells (Cruden Bay) who went on to become a Walker Cup player.
