Murrayfield's Jonnie Cliff wins Titleist
PGA Assistant of the Year title
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE PGA
Scottish golf pro Jonnie Cliff has swapped hole-in-ones for double top after winning one of the PGA’s most prestigious honours – the Titleist PGA Assistant of the Year.
It is a remarkable achievement for the Murrayfield Golf Club, Edinburgh head professional as it comes on the back of being top dog at the end of his second year of the three-year PGA Foundation degree 12 months ago.
But this year’s honour is the ultimate achievement, having beaten his peers to the once-in-a-lifetime award.
The 32-year-old collected the Whitcombe Cox Trophy and a cheque for £3,500 from England football legend Sir Bobby Charlton at the PGA graduation ceremony at the University of Birmingham today.
“My thoughts this year were to try and do my best and maintain the standards I set myself by coming top the previous year,” said Dumfries-born Cliff.
“That pushed me to emulate that and kick-started my third year. But it wasn’t the easiest either because I’d been given the head pro’s job at the club and was trying to set up and run the business and do the PGA course at the same time.
“It was a tough because I was trying organise business plans, deciding what stock to buy for the summer and getting the coaching sorted for the Young Masters Golf, in which we were named the top club in the country.
“So it means an awful lot to come out on top of all your peers when you know they are doing the same course and working as hard as you. You strive to do as well as you can. It was a great feeling to find out and to know that all the hard work was worth it.”
Cliff is a ‘latecomer’ to the golf profession, having previously worked as a marketing manager, and he revealed that the foundation degree has given him the skills to succeed in his new career path.
“The course has been a huge help to me,” he said. “We do a lot of coaching at the club and everything I’ve learned, including the role of sports science, I’ve been able to link it all together. The business management side has been extremely useful too.”
