Longcake on trail of second English
national title at Woodhall Spa

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
John Longcake from Cumbria will seek to become a double national champion when the English county champions' tournament takes place over the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa on Saturday.
Longcake, from Silloth-on-Solway, won the English mid-amateur championship for a second time when he triumphed at Shifnal last month. Now the six-time Cumbria champion can also become the county champion of England.
Also competing is Tommy Fleetwood, the former England boys' captain, who made his full England debut in the recent home internationals at Muirfield. The Lancashire champion will be partnered by Jason Palmer from Leicestershire, who won the Midland amateur title this year as well as finishing runner-up in the Chiberta Grand Prix and the Parman championship.
Andrew Sullivan, 21, the Warwickshire champion, winner of the Berkhamsted Trophy and a semi-finalist in the British amateur championship, is also in the field and will be playing along side Gloucestershire champion Oliver Glaze.
Matt Kippen, 17, who has enjoyed a string of victories this year including the English Schools and South West boys' championships and was a quarter finalist in the British boys' championship, is representing Somerset and will play alongside Surrey champion Warren Harmston. Unfortunately, several champions are absent, some having returned to college in the United States including Paul Amess of Hertfordshire and Adam Winwood, the Essex champion.
The champions will compete over 36 holes of the testing Hotchkin Course to decide who will be crowned the county champion of England.
Besides carrying off the title, the winner will also gain automatic entry into next year’s Brabazon Trophy. The winner will also join an elite list of champions that includes Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Peter McEvoy, and Lee Westwood.
The English champions' event will be preceded on the previous day (Friday, September 19) by the Presidents and Guests' Tournament, also on the Hotchkin course.
The 60-strong field includes former Walker Cup player and England international Martin Christmas, now President of Surrey, and Derbyshire President John Flanders, EGU President in 2000.
Others competing are Ian Burton, President of Kent and captain of the successful Kent seniors team, golf author John Moreton, President of Worcestershire, and his guest, Andrew Boyd, the current secretary of Worcestershire.
More information, news and results for the English county champions' tournament can be found on the Championships section of the EGU website www.englishgolfunion.org
