Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship

Bookless makes his Mark with
30 for Lansdowne back nine

Blairgowrie Golf Club members could hardly believe when they heard that Sandyhills teenager Mark Bookless had reduced the tough inward half on the Lansdowne course to a mere 30 strokes from the back tees today.
Bookless, playing in the first round of the firstpointusa.com Scottish boys' open amateur stroke-play championship, shot six birdies after the turn - at the 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th.
Mark had gone out in a fairly average one-over-par 37 with a birdie at the first and bogeys at the third and seventh. But that inspired run gave him a five-under-par round of 67 to lead the field.
Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) tucked in behind Bookless with a 68, spreading his five birdies more evenly - at the first, third, sixth, 12th and 17th in halves of 34. He had only one bogey as well, at the fourth.
Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), bidding to pull off the rarely achieved Scottish boys' match-play and stroke-play doube, could feel well satisfied with a two-under 70 which gives him a platform from which to launch a challenge over the next three rounds.
Stewart had birdies at the first, 12th, 15tgh and 1`7th in halves of 36 and 34. He had bogeyed the third and 13th.
