PGA National Pro-Am Championship
Regional Final at Lanark on Monday
PRESS RELEASED ISSUED BY PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS' ASSOCIATION
Glaswegian golf pro Alastair Forrow admits he'd better starts practising if he is to qualify for the grand final of Europe's biggest pro-am for a third time.
Whitecraigs professional Forrow will join forces with amateur Guy Horton at Lanark on Monday for the final place in this year's PGA National Pro-Am Championship.
The 40-year pro, who reached the grand final in 1997 and again in 2004, has been short of match practice due to a recent arrival in the family - and an increased workload at the club.
But with fewer than 30 clubs in the field, Forrow admits his chances of success, which will see the winners enjoying an all-expenses-paid trip to the grand final in Turkey, may just have increased despite his lack of action.
"It's quite a small field so that gives us pretty good odds of going through on the day," he said."I'm really looking forward to giving it a go and I know my partner is too. But I've not been playing too much this year; in fact it's probably the least I've played in any year.
"I've got a baby daughter this year and I've found I've been more involved with the business, so I've not had as much time but I think that means I'll enjoy the day more."
But Forrow would love to have another crack at the title after his two previous attempts fell short and thinks he and his 17 handicap partner, an accountant from Glasgow, could give him another shot.
"It was great to reach the grand final but ultimately I was disappointed with the performance so if I get to go back with Guy it would be good to make a better showing," he said.
"I've known Guy for 15 years and he's a good player. We've only played together once, so it'll be a case of how we gel on the day but that's the same for all the teams."
Despite the size of the field there are a number of past grand finalists also looking to add to their tally of appearances including former PGA Cup player Gordon Law (Uphall), Jacky Montgomery (Dunbar), Paul Wardell (Whitekirk), Gordon Stewart (Cawder) and Ian Taylor (Drumpellier)Also in the field are Grant Robertson (Lanark), Neil Colquhoun (Merchants of Edinburgh), Richard Hall (Turnberry) and Paul Terras (Goswick).
The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now in its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.
This year's grand final, played over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club, has a professional prize fund of £30,000 and is being played from November 30 to December 4.
