EUROPEAN TOUR DEBUT FOR CALLUM

“On the tee… CALLUM MACAULAY…SCOTLAND” The words of famous starter Ivor Robson resonated around the first tee at Loch Lomond, followed by loud applause and marked the start of Callum’s first round in a European tour event.
His first drive flew straight, some 25 yards ahead of his professional playing partners, Peter Baker and Andrew Oldcorn, and gave the Tulliallan supporters great hope. A few holes later he stood one below par, but Scotland’s No 1 amateur could not recover from a run of four bogeys from the ninth to the 12th, and had to settle for a three over par score of 74.
In his second round, and needing a sub par score, he carded a level par first nine, but could not make the required number of birdies to beat the cut at two under par. His 36 hole total of five-over-par was a good opening in the Barclay’s Scottish Open, finishing ahead of several well known names and Callum proved he has the game and golfing skills to compete at that level.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
The flagship event of the Scottish Amateur golf scene heads to Carnoustie at the end of July, and will undoubtedly be in Callum Macaulay’s sights. A record entry has been obtained with a handicap limit of 0.6.
Maybe part of the reason is that the entry fee is around half the round ticket at Carnoustie ( this year set at £125), and competitors are guaranteed a practice round, and a match play game. Callum naturally is seeded no 1, and plays at 7.25 on the first Monday.
Other wee County players in the field are Scott Borrowman (Dollar) who has to wait till the Tuesday to tee off, and Braehead’s Scott Moffat who has a tough game against Scottish international Jonathan King. Scott tees off at 12.13 on Monday 28th.

SCOTTISH GOLF RANKINGS
Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) continues to lead the Scottish rankings, and in the World rankings he moves up 13 places to 34th place, and widens the gap with Wallace Booth who has moved up only two places.
Scott Borrowman (Dollar), with a third place finish in a recent Order of Merit event at Haggs Castle, will also see his ranking improve.

BOB KEEPS UP THE GOOD FORM
Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart is still producing good golf on the Seniors circuit, and in the recent South Seniors Championship, he finished near the top of the field with rounds of 71 and 72, only four shots behind the winner.
With more Senior events at Nairn and Hamilton, he has a good chance of staying near the top of the Seniors Order of Merit. At present he is in third place

CLACKMANNANSHIRE BOYS SCORE IN THE EAST
At the Glen course in North Berwick, it was the turn of the Under-14 and Under-16 boys to show their golfing skills, and it is pleasing to report that local boys made the 70 mile trip.
In the Under-16s it was the Dollar duo of county champion Gary Chalmers and Tom Hogarth who competed in a field of around 120 for the national title. In the three-round event, with a cut after two rounds, the two boys opened with rounds of 76 and 77.
Needing an improvement, only Tom managed to score three shots better to give him an aggregate of 151 which missed the cut by one shot. Gary fell back with a 78. In a way it was a blessing for Tom as the final round was abandoned due to flooding so he didn’t have to make a wasted journey.
Three locals were in the field of 112 for the Under-14s event, played over 18 holes. Best local performance came from Lawrence Allan (Alva) with a score of 75 putting him in 11th place, six shots behind the leaders.
Also in the field were the Boyd brothers, flying the flag for Alloa Golf Club. With much higher handicaps, they were never going to threaten the leaders, but they both turned in respectable performances.
Calum, with an 81, finished in the top half of the field at 41st place, and 11 year old Angus, with a 90, finished a bit further down. Altogether good performances considering the boys could not have a practice round due to the weather.
Calum had a couple of 2s in his inward nine, while Angus finished with a flourish, hitting his approach shot to the last hole to a few feet and holing the putt for a birdie.

JUNIOR MASTERS REGIONAL FINAL
The local final for the Junior Masters event for 2008 takes place this week at Dunblane. Local boys entered for the event are Ryan Millar and Myles Beaton (both Alloa); Grant Carmichael, Richard Brown (both Tillicoultry) and Ben Smith (Dollar). The leading scores will go to the National final, to be held over the Queen’s Course, Gleneagles at the end of the season.
