Defending champion Drew Weaver endured a day of mixed fortunes upon his return to The Amateur Championship at Turnberry on Monday.
The Virginia Tech student lost two balls during his round of 75 on the Kintyre course, but balanced his dropped shots with three birdies to keep himself in with a chance of qualifying for the match play phase of the event.
Though he admitted to feeling extra nerves after being announced on the first tee as the defending champion, Weaver showed no outward signs of frailty in birdieing both of the first two holes.
He was still two under par playing the 5th hole when the first cracks appeared: a 3-wood from the tee drifted towards the gorse never to be seen again, and he needed five more shots to sink his second ball.
The resulting triple-bogey threw last year's champion, who then dropped three more shots in the next seven holes with a blocked a 4-iron on the ninth, a missed 15-inch tap-in on the 10th and three-putt on the 12th.
But with a possible collapse looming Weaver showed just why he loves links golf so much, pulling things round and producing a series of seven and eight-foot putts for par saves on the 15th, 16th and 17th.
He then got up and down for a birdie on the short par-5 18th to give himself a three-over-par opening round of 75."I didn't play too badly but it could have been worse," he said. "I putted well and made some really good strokes, which I haven't done so far this year. I just really love playing links golf."


Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), beaten semi-finalist in last year's championship, was the leading Scot at the end of the first qualifying round. He had a 68. Next best Scot was young Neil Henderson (Glen), last year's Scottish junior champion of champions and the 2007 Scottish schoolboys title-winner.
