Ross Drummond shares clubhouse
lead in Jersey Seniors Classic

From Steve Todd, Seniors Tour Press Officer
South African Bertus Smit admitted winning the Jersey Seniors Classic would solve all his problems after firing a second successive level par 72 in the second round at La Moye Golf Club. Smit needs a top ten finish to play his way into next week’s Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open, having temporarily relocated to London to compete on the European Seniors Tour to save on travel costs from his homeland.
Having not made the field for last week’s Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship, the 55 year old is eager to string a run of tournaments together and is just one shot behind early clubhouse leaders Bob Cameron and Ross Drummond (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, all rights reserved).
He carded two birdies on the front nine to move to within a shot of overnight leader Tony Johnstone’s three under par total but back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes saw him slip back.
“I didn’t make Poland so I’m under pressure here this week and I know I need a top ten finish,” said Smit, who only turned professional in 2000 following a successful amateur career in South Africa.
“I played well today but bogeyed 17 and 18. I was satisfied though and I thought I putted reasonably well. I didn’t make much but I didn’t lose shots either.
“I’m planning to stay here for six months so I need to do well to keep on playing. If I could win it would mean everything to me. It really would solve all my problems.”
Englishman Cameron shot a three under par round of 69 to move to one under par for the tournament, where he is level with four times Scottish pro champion Drummond, who carded a one under par 71.
