Late Dick effort brightens
home hopes in East
of Scotland Open

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Just when it looked like it was going to be an overseas 1-2 at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the first day of the East of Scotland Open amateur championship, sponsored by the Bobby Jones Golf Company, up popped Allyn Dick (Shotts), the Scottish mid-amateur champion of 2005 and 2006, to share the limelight.
Dick, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, one of the last men to finish, posted a fine round of three-under-par 68 in the windy conditions for a halfway total of level par 142 to share second place.
Earlier, globe-trotting circuit followers Justin Turner (South Africa) and Australian Scott Arnold cashed in on the absence of Scotland’s top amateurs – heading for Italy and next week’s European team championships – to fill first and second places on their own.
Turner, who has recently improved his R&A World Ranking by more than 100 places to No 292, had rounds of 69 and 72 for a 36-hole tally of one-under-par 141. He was the only man to be under par at the end of the first two rounds.
Arnold, ranked within the world’s leading 100, had a pair of 71s.
Only those with totals of 150 or better qualified for Sunday’s final 36 holes.
First-round leaders Christopher Bradley from Pitreavie and former Scottish match-play champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) left the door open to the chasing pack with their soaring afternoon scores.
Bradley, not quoted pre-tournament as a contender, slipped into the pole position before lunch with a four-under-par 67, one shot ahead of Campbell.
But second time round it was a different story. Bradley took nine shots more for a 76 and a one-over-par halfway tally of 143.
Campbell matched that – though he would have much preferred to better it – with a 75.
