David Horsey on top in Challenge

England’s David Horsey took route 66 to the top of the leaderboard on day two of the Telenet Trophy on the European Challenge Tour.
Six birdies in a flawless round of golf at Limburg Golf and Country Club in Houthalen, Belgium, saw Horsey overhaul France’s Jean Pierre Cixous, who sits one shot back on ten under par. Horsey’s round of 66 put the man from Stockport firmly in the frame to capture his maiden Challenge Tour title.
He said: “Over the last few weeks I’ve had a few decent rounds, but then I’ve started analysing my performances too much. If I’ve hit a bad shot I’ve started thinking about why, instead of just putting it to the back of my mind and taking the positives from my round. So I’ve tried to clear my mind of clutter, and concentrate on just putting the ball in the right places – on the fairways and the greens. Golf’s quite a simple game really – we just over-complicate it sometimes.”
An identical round from Horsey’s playing partner and compatriot Simon Robinson saw him finish on eight under par, and gave the man from Hartlepool every chance of repeating his maiden success at last week’s SK Golf Challenge, where he beat European Tour champion Miko Ilonen on his home turf.
Robinson, who hails from the same town as European Tour winner Graeme Storm, said: “I’ve struggled to get into many tournaments in the past, but I’ve learned from it and became even more determined to succeed. My goals for the season changed almost overnight with the win, particularly with it coming so early in the season. Now my focus is to finish the top ten in the Rankings come the end of the season.”
Robinson is currently in fourth place, two shots behind overnight leader Cixous, who followed yesterday’s 66 with a measured round of 68.
The Frenchman said: “I only made one mistake today, with a three putt for bogey on the third hole. I had a downhill putt, and left it short. But that was my first bogey over the two days. Other than that, I played well. I made a putt from off the green for birdie on the second hole, then another one from about 12 feet on the third hole. So that was a nice start, and it gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of my round.”
One shot further back is Wil Besseling of the Netherlands, already a winner on this season’s Challenge Tour Schedule. Besseling started badly, bogeying his opening hole, but soon bounced back with five birdies on the front nine and a further two after the turn to sign for a 66.
France’s Christophe Brazillier is in fifth place on seven under par alongside compatriot Francois Calmels, after both men carded rounds of 67. The highlight of both their rounds came at the par five 13th hole, which they eagled.
