Start of Scottish men's area team championship
PHILIP McLEAN STAGES GRANDSTAND
FINISH TO WIN AT CRUDEN BAY
North-east made a good start to this year's Scottish Golf Union men's area team championship with a resounding 8-1 win over Argyll & Bute at Cruden Bay in a Group C tie today.
North-east reached the semi-finals 12 months ago and the incentive this year is that the semi-finals and final will be played at Tain in the North of Scotland on October 4 and 5.
Not all the North-east players had "easy" matches. For instance, youth cap Philip McLean from Peterhead was four down with five holes to play against George Reynolds in the No 2 singles tie.
Champions Lothians started their campaign with a 6.5-2.5 win at Craigielaw over
They were beaten 5-4 by Borders at Peebles.
South, who were in the final four last autumn, had a surprisingly comfortable 6-3 win over Angus at Panmure.
Fife led Stirling 2-1 at Thornton after the foursomes but the visitors levelled the scoreline at 4.5 apiece by taking the singles 3.5 to 2.5.
The North suffered a disappointing 5-4 defeat in their only home section tie, to Lanarkshire at Royal Dornoch
The North can lay no blame on their two newly crowned champions, Brian Fotheringham (Forres) who won the District title at Forres on Saturday and Fraser Fotheringham (The Nairn) who won the Youths championship at the same venue.
This pair got three of the North's four points. They were the North's only winners in the foursomes and in the singles Brian Fotheringham recovered from two behind after four holes to win three on the run from the seventh to the ninth.
Then, after a birdie at the 17th, the North champion won on the last green against Lanark's Alyn Dick (Shotts).
Fraser Fotheringham, with a birdie 3 on the 16th green, was always a comfortable winner over Steve Rennie (Drumpellier).
Two of the single matches went to the last green but both points went to the visitors. North's Michael MacDonald (Fortrose & Rosemarkie) found the rough from the tee and a bunker with his recovery to lose by one hole to Paul Shields (Shotts).
Inverness's Bruce Thomson three-putted the last green to lose by one hole to Kevin Loughrie(Cambuslang). The North's third singles winner was Kevin Thomson Moray who won with a birdie on the 17th againsy David Henderson (Hamilton).
