2008 COUNTY GOLF SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
The Clackmannan county golf season gets underway this coming weekend with the County Spring Meetings at Tulliallan for the Division 1 players and Braehead for the Division 2 players. Late entries will still be accepted until Friday and as usual the event is a bargain with the entry fee set at £8 with the chance to win good prizes.
The Division 1 event is the first opportunity to qualify for the County match-play championship in June, with eight players being selected, the remaining eight coming from the Summer Meeting.
COUNTY FOURSOMES
The Clackmannan county club foursomes tournament starts next week on Tuesday at Alloa Golf Club where the holders Braehead take on Alloa in a first-round tie, the winner to meet Alva a week later.
The Thursday match sees Tillicoultry take on Tulliallan, with the winner to meet Dollar. Each match consists of three couples playing foursomes, with the aggregate of holes up and down determining the result. Matches start at 5.15 pm.
COUNTY BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Clackmannan county boys' championship takes place at Tillicoultry on May 4, and entry forms are in the local golf clubs. For many of the junior boys, it could be the start of progression up the ladder to greater things in golf. Lawrence Allan (Alva) and Grant Dowie (Alloa) will be defending their county junior titles, and the event will be a pointer to selection for the county boys' teams for 2008.
PROVAN SALVER 2008
The Clackmannan county team take on Perth and Kinross at Alloa Golf Club on Sunday in the final match of the 2008 Provan Salver. With the abandoned Fife match being declared a draw, it looks like the winner will be either Clackmannan or Fife.
The target of the Clackmannan county team will be to try to win by as many games as possible and hope that will be enough to finish ahead of Fife who will be trying to do exactly the same thing in their match against Angus.
MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY
The 12-a-side match between a European team and an Asian Pacific team takes place at the end of the week at Valderrama in southern Spain. There are two Scots in the team - Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) and Wallace Booth (Comrie). The remaining 10 come from the Home Nations (two from England, one from Wales and one from Ireland) with six from Europe.
The format is five four-ball foursomes on the first two days with 12 singles on the final day (Sunday. Europe won the trophy in 2006 at Auckland by 18-14.
EUROPEAN ORDER OF MERIT
The European Golf Association (EGA) runs an order of merit for amateur players. At present Callum Macaulay lies seventh and Scott Borrowman (Dollar) 106th.
SCOTTISH LADIES GOLF
It would be nice to report some local participation in Scottish Ladies Golf but regrettably in the Helen Holm Scottish Ladies open stroke play event at Troon this coming weekend there is no sign of any Clackmannan or Stirling entrants.
Out of the 99 entrants, 21 are from Scotland, the rest are from out with Scotland with a large European presence.
