IRISH SCOTS SHARE THIRD PLACE
IN SPANISH SENIOR MEN'S
PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
Two Ireland-based Scots, playing with English partners, finished joint third in the Spanish senior men's open pairs championship at Bonalba Golf Club, Alicante today.
Ian Stewart, a member at Curragh Golf Club, teamed up with Ian Mason for rounds of 74 and 73 for a three-over-par tally of 147. Donald McCart, who plays out of Castlerock Golf Club, Londonderry, partnered Stuart Pond to 73 and 74 for the same total which was eight shots behind the title-winners,.
Italy's Federico Lang and Portugal's Nuno de Brito e Cunha spreadeagle the field with rounds of 67 and 72 for five-under-par 139 and a six-stroke victory from Ireland's Maurice Kelly and Hugh Smith.
Aberdeen's John Johnston and Sandy Pirie were the highest-placed all-Scottish pairing in joint eighth position in a field of 60 couples.
Royal Aberdeen member Johnston and Hazlehead's Pirie had rounds of 71 and 79 for a six-over-par total of 150. Blackpool-based Scot Bob Edgar and Welshman Glyn Rees finished joint 10th on 151 with scores of 73 and 78.
Gordon MacDonald from Callander today (Friday) starts his bid to win the Spanish senior men's open individual title three years in a row.
Gordon and Derek Murphy from Kinrosh finished joint 16th on 152 in the curtain-raising pairs tournament.
