ALVA BOYS AT THE TOP ON THE BONNIE BANKS

As a result of winning the County Boys Golf League, the Alva boys' team went forward to represent their club and the Wee County in the Scottish National Final of the junior team event. The prize up for grabs was a trip to La Manga in Spain to compete against the other home nations, so there was considerable interest and keen competition.
The final was played over the tough 6,700yd par-71 lay-out at the recently opened Carrick on Loch Lomond course and involved 13 clubs from most areas of Scotland. Each club was represented by six boys, and the final team total involved a combination of scratch and handicap scores, with one discarded score.
And play well the Alva team did, finishing in fifth position, indeed only five shots away from the prize list. All the team members were quite adamant that they could have saved five shots on their own!
Said Davie Allan, junior organiser: “I was a bit worried that all the arrangements would work out, but they did and it was a bonus to finish high up the field. The boys all enjoyed themselves, the Alva shirt was worn proudly and we even managed to organise them a burger and chips in the plush Clubhouse.
"Particular thanks must go to Marshall Construction for their help with the transport arrangements.”
Yes, a great day for the smallest club in the smallest golfing area in Scotland, proving the boys can compete against anyone, and hopefully will inspire the team members to higher things.
Top Alva scores contributing to the team total were county junior champion Lawrence Allan with a scratch 82, and Reyner Kennedy and David Fisher with net 75s.
The other contributions came from Martin Hall, Scott Thomson and team captain Gary Elliot.
TOP RESULTS (best five scores)
1 Craigielaw 370, 2 Eastwood 375, Deeside 394, 4 Musselburgh 396, 5 Alva 398, 6 (equal) Gullane, Cathkin Braes 399.
WORLD AMATEUR GOLF RANKINGS
The latest weekly rankings at week 40 published by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club show Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) at 44 (up five places), his nearest Scottish rival Wallace Booth (Comrie) at 53 (up eight places).
Both are well ahead of the next Scot, Keir McNicoll at 80. Scott Borrowman is at 446 (up nine places).
The Scottish Golfer of the Year is decided on the ranking position at the end of October in around three weeks.
With the Order of Merit title safely in the bag, Callum will be hoping for the double when the finishing line is reached.
BUNKERED MATCHPLAY CHALLENGE
The “Bunkered” Golf Magazine Challenge will be held at the end of this week, and involves aRyder Cup style format over two days - Friday four-balls and foursomes, Saturday singles matches.
The two teams involved are a Scottish mateur select playing a Scottish professional select (captained by former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallagher), and the event is being played over the Carrick on Loch Lomond course, probably at its full length which is just over 7000yd.
including the par-5 eighth hole at 611yd.
Great to report that the top two Wee County golfers have been selected for the amateur team - Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) and Scott Borrowman (Dollar). Not only do they have a top class golf experience, they also get a taste of luxury for a few days in the Cameron House Hotel beside Loch Lomond! Well worth a trip to support them.
