PRESS RELEASE

WORLD HICKORY OPEN ATTRACTS ROOKIE PRO
LLOYD SALTMAN OVER HOME COURSE

After playing in his second Walker Cup and a new sponsorship from the assurance giant Aegon, Lloyd Saltman will be aiming to wrestle the coveted World Hickory Open quaich from his 19-year-old brother Zack who put together an impressive 67 to win this prestigious tournament last year.
The event will be played over the Saltmans' home course, East Lothian’s Craigielaw links at the end of the month (September 27th and 28th).
However, with a much increased list of professionals from last year likely to tee off in the World Hickory Open with a £17,500 prize fund, the challenge should be a tough one. The St Andrews Open 2005 silver medallist, Lloyd will be playing against brothers Elliot and Zack.
Elliot turned professional earlier this year, also with support from Aegon. Last week he scored his first win as a rookie pro - the 54-hole Ethos Group Classic on the PGA EuroPro Tour.
Other Scottish professionals in the field will include Dean Robertson (past winner of the Italian Open) as well as Mark King, Alan Lockhart, Jackie Montgomery and David Patrick.
The tournament should be even tougher to win than last year when former Ryder Cup captain, Bernard Gallacher gave the Hickory Open a considerable promotional fillip when he participated.

Tournament organiser, Lionel Freedman, states that the Pro-Am on Thursday 27th September is almost fully subscribed with just under 40 teams and is proving to be extremely popular. With over forty pros signed up some weeks in advance of the tournament, he anticipates a field of over 70 for the World Hickory Open on Friday 28th September. What is doubly exciting he says, is that we have teams from America, Sweden, France as well as the home nations taking part

There is one change this year to the format – instead of five pre-1935 hickory clubs, six are now permitted. However it would still be a considerable achievement to better Zack Saltman’s extraordinary score of 67 in last year’s tournament.

The event is sponsored by East Lothian Council with subsidiary sponsorships and teams from the following:-

B.N. Paribas, Dunedin Independent, Whigam’s Wine Bars, Leith Links, Lyon & Turnbull, Malmaison, Hamilton & Inches, Oriental Minerals, Royal Burgess Golfing Society, Georgian Antiques, Bell Security, Your Golf Holidays, Concept, Ducks at Kilspindie House Hotel, Alex Kirkwood & Son, Winton House and Craigielaw Golf Club.
