LEE HARPER PICKS UP £10,000 FOR
FIRST WIN ON PGA EUROPRO TOUR
Lee Harper from Musselburgh, the 1999 Scottish boys' match-play champion, today became the second Scot to win on the PGA EuroPro Tour.
Playing out of Archerfield Links, Harper, pictured right, won the £10,000 first prize at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off with Justin Evans of the Wentworth Club. They had tied on five-under-par 205 in the Ladbrokescasino.com Masters at Selsdon Park, South Croydon in Surrey.
Harper had scored 67, 69 and 69, Evans 64, 71 and 70. Evans had to settle for the £5,000 runner-up prize.
Lee had won only £585 in total from his previous seven competitions on the tour.
This is not Harper's first win as a professional. He won the John Panton 90 Young Professionals' tournament on the Tartan Tour last year.
Harper had started the third day on four-under-par but his hopes of winning the tournament looked to be slipping away when he stumbled to a double-bogey 6 at the seventh. But the little Scot turned things round with three birdies in four holes - on the 12th, 14th and 15th – but a bogey on the 17th meant he would be competing in a play-off.
Evans had been leader after the first round but lost his advantage with a one-over second round score of 71, despite an eagle on the 15th.
However, he stayed in touch and played his part in the play-off after a final round level par total of 70, which included five birdies and five bogeys.
The top 50 players on the PGA EuroPr0 Tour Order of Merit list will now play in next month’s end of season Tour Championship. The top five in the Order of Merit at the end of the competition will secure 2008 Challenge Tour cards. However, there could be a reprieve for the man who ends up in sixth position as Colm Moriarty, who still occupies a top five place at the moment, has already earned a Challenge Tour card after winning an event on their tour earlier this year.
At Selsdon Park today, Jack Doherty finished joint 18th on 213; Neil Mitchell joint 24th on 215 and Graham Gordon joint 29th on 216.
