R&A PRESS RELEASE

WILL AMERICANS CONTINUE MONOPOLY OF
SENIORS OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
AT NAIRN & NAIRN DUNBAR THIS WEEK?

Over the past ten years, the Senior Open Amateur Championship has taken on a decidedly transatlantic bias with American players winning in eight of those ten years. It is therefore no surprise that U.S. based players dominate the entry and are strong contenders for the title at Nairn and Nairn Dunbar from Wednesday to Friday this week.
Paul Simson, 56, from North Carolina was the winner last year at Saunton in his first attempt at the title. With a 10 over par aggregate of 223, he shot to a five shot victory over fellow American Rick Woulfe and 2002 Champion John Baldwin.
In September 2006, Mike Bell, holed an 8-foot putt to win the USGA Senior Amateur Championship. Now, the 60-year-old Indianapolis resident is hoping to add to his collection of silverware with a win in the ‘British’ at Nairn. Tom McGraw, 56, the defeated finalist is also in the field.
England’s Roy Smethurst, the winner in 2003 at Blairgowrie is again competing as is Ian Hutcheon, of Monifieth, the four times Walker Cup player who won this year’s Scottish Seniors title at Drumpellier to add to his wins of 2003 and 2004.
Nairn Golf Club on the shores of the Moray Firth, has been a regular venue for championships at every level and only last August played host to the Scottish Amateur Championship. In 1999 it was the scene of a historic win for GB&I in the Walker Cup, heralding the start of a run of three successive victories.
Nairn Dunbar, to the east of the town, also enjoys a reputation as a fine links course and has recently hosted the Northern Professional Championship, the Scottish Ladies’ Stroke Play and the Seniors’ Home Internationals.
The field of 252 players play 18-holes on each of Nairn and Nairn Dunbar with the leading 60 players and ties playing at further 18-holes over Nairn on the Friday.
The full list of competitors can be viewed at www.randa.org – Championships.
