MACAULAY BLOWS CHANCE OF CLEAR LEAD IN EAST
OF SCOTLAND OPEN AT LUNDIN LINKS

British amateur championship semi-finalist Callum Macaulay from Tulliallan looked set for at least a two-shot halfway lead in the East of Scotland Open amateur championship at Lundin Golf Club, Fife.
Callum, tied with fellow American college circuit player Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) on four-under-par 67 at the end of the first round, had improved to six under par for the tournament with just four holes to play in the second round.
With Stewart, who played the last four years on the college circuit as a student at Jacksonville University, Florida, back in the clubhouse after a second-circuit 71 for a tally of four-under-par 138, Macaulay, a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi, stumbled unexpectedly and dropped three shots over the 15th, 16th and 17th holes.
He finished on 72 for 139.
It still looks a Stewart v Macaulay shoot-out over Sunday’s final 36 holes as they are two shots clear of Scott Henry (Cardross), the non-playing reserve to the Scotland squad of six for next week’s European amateur team championship at Western Gailes.
But don’t write off the 2005 champion, Wallace Booth (Comrie) – another who has just finished four years on the American college circuit as a student at Augusta State University.
Wallace had a third-round 64 in last weekend’s Tennant Cup to win that title by vie shots when rain washed out the final round.
Booth, whose 15-year-old sister Carly won the Scottish Under-21 girls’ open title at Auchterarder by NINE shots on Friday after Wallace gave her some tips, is four shots off the pace on 142 with rounds of 68 and 74.
