YANKEE DOODLE LADS TO THE FORE IN
EAST OF SCOTLAND OPEN
Two players who completed four years on the American college circuit last month, Duncan Stewart from Grantown on Spey, and Callum Macaulay of Tulliallan, shared the lead on four-under-par 67 at the end of the first round in the 72-hole East of Scotland Open championship at Lundin Golf Club, Fife today (Saturday).
And yet another past US golf scholarship student, Wallace Booth from Comrie, last weekend's winner ofr the Tennant Cup at Glasgow Killermont and winner of this title two years ago, was sharing third place on 68 with Scott Henry (Cardross), first reserve to the Scotland squad for next week's European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes.
The six-man line-up have had to miss the East of Scotland Open to put in some last-minute practice over the Ayrshire links.
Stewart spent a very successful four years at Jacksonville University, Florida while Macaulay's experience on the highly competitive American college circuit showed in the recent British amateur championship at Royal Lytham where Macaulay reached the semi-finals.
The field will but cut to the leading 40 and ties for the final 36 holes on Sunday.
