Scottish 72-hole youths championship
AT HALFWAY WITH 66 IN SECOND
ROUND AT ERSKINE
Dollar's Scott Borrowman swept into the halfway lead of the Scottish boys' match-play championship with a sizzling five-under-par 66 for a 36-hole tally of 134 at Erskine Golf Club today.
With a few players still to finish, Stirling University student Borrowman had gone two shots clear of long-time leader Andrew Campbell (Dumbarton), a quarter-finalist in this year's Scottish boys' match-play championship at Dunbar.
After a promising opening round of 68, Borrowman, a +2 player whose mother played hockey for Scotland and Great Britain, did not have the best of starts on the second circuit with a bogey at the first hole. That was the first and only mistake that Scott made. He settled down and covered the last 13 holes in six under par with birdies at the sixth, eighth, ninth, 10th, 14th and 18th.
He is on the eight-under-par mark with two rounds to go on Sunday.
Campbell has had scores of 67 and 69 for a six-under-par tally of 136 over the par-71 lay-out.
He bogeyed the third but birdied the fourth and ninth to be out in one-under-par 31. Andrew got a 2 at the short 11th but dropped a second shot of the day at the 16th before birdieing the 18th for halves of 35 and 34.
Stuart Ballingall from Norfolk had a 66 to be one of a cluster in joint third place on 137.
The Dunston Hall Golf Club junior member birdied the first, third and fourth before dropping his first shot of the day at the fifth. He birdied the ninth to be out in 33. Ballingall had further birdies at the 12th, 15th and 18th on the inward half with only a bogey at the 16th to take him down a peg.
Ben Newsome (East Sussex National) joined Ballingall on 137 with a second-round 67.
Lewis Kirton (Newmachar), a student a the University of Louisville, Kentucky, one of three joint leaders on 66 overnight, slipped back a bit with a 73 for 139. Kirton bogeyed the eighth to be out in one-over 37. He did birdie the 12th but it was his only sub-par figure of the day. Bogeys at the 14tjh and 17th pushed him out to two over par.
Zack Saltman (Craigielaw), the first player to hit the 66 mark on Friday, had to settle for a par 71 to be a third player one shot off the pace on 137 at halfway. Zack started well enough in his second round with birdies at the first and fourth but his bogeys tended to come in clusters - the fifth and seventh, then, late on, the 13th, 16th and 17th. Fortunately he was able to cancel them out with further birdies at the ninth, 10th and 18th. Winner of the inaugural world hickory championship last year against adults - and professional adults at that - is by no means out of the hunt at this Under-21 level with 36 holes to go.
The halfway cut fell at 143 - totals of 144 and worse did not qualify for Sunday play.
