The Way they Were ... in 1985

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ABERDEENSHIRE LAST
FOUR OF 22 YEARS AGO
AT BALGOWNIE
The Aberdeenshire women's county championship begins on Friday with the qualifying round at Newmachar Golf Club.
Our "Way they Were" picture is a flashback to the same championship in 1985 when it was hosted by Aberdeen Ladies and played over the Balgownie links.
Pamela Wright, second left, from Aboyne, then 20, beat 17-year-old Elaine Farquharson (Deeside), second from right, by one hole in the final.
Beaten semi-finalists Julie Forbes (Aboyne), end left, and Margaret Joss (Ballater), end right, are also pictured along with the Aberdeenshire county captain of the day, Anna Rae (Murcar).
Where are they now?
Julie Forbes turned professional and played on the Ladies European Tour for a spell. Last heard of living in Ireland.
Pamela Wright turned professional and was the Rookie of the Year on the LPGA Tour in America three or four years later. She later dropped out of the tour with a shoulder injury that would plague her for the rest of her career. Last heard of coaching in Phoenix, Arizona.
Elaine Farquharson went on to win the Scottish girls match-play championship in 1985 and the Scottish women's title in 1990. She turned professional for 18 months after her second Curtis Cup appearance in 1992. It was not the life for her and she has since made a career as a solicitor, specialising in planning and environmental law, with Paull and Williamsons in Aberdeen. Reinstated as an amateur, she plays golf only socially now but still has scratch or one of a handicap.
