BRABAZON TROPHY THIRD-ROUND UPDATE
WORLD NUMBER ONE AMATEUR JAMIE MOUL TAKES
UP RUNNING IN THIRD ROUND OF BRABAZON TROPHY
Jamie Moul, No 1 in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings, takes a one-shot lead into the fourth and final round of the Brabazon Trophy after an eventful morning at Forest of Arden that produced a course record and a hole-in-one.
The 22 year old from Suffolk shot 67 to lead on 209, seven under par, one clear of Frenchman Kenny Le Sager, whose third round 65 was a course record.
Sharing third spot on 212 are Richard Kilpatrick from Ireland after a 71, England boy cap Sam Hutsby, who returned 70, and Rhys Enoch, the Cornish-based Welsh lad, with 69.
But the French are handily placed with four players in the top 10, led by Le Sager.
Much kinder conditions after two days of strong winds and heavy showers brought a torrent of low scores with 21 of the 48-strong field beating par compared to only 18 on the first two days.
Le Sager led the way with seven birdies in his bogey-free 65, three coming in the final three holes.
He was out in 33 and remarked: “The front nine has been hitting me over the first two rounds so I just had to take advantage today. When I got to the turn three under I was happy and didn’t want the opposite to happen on the back nine.”
Le Sager set the target on six under but Moul was behind until the back nine which he covered in 32 strokes, edging ahead with his sixth birdie at the 516-yard 17th.
But it wasn’t a good morning for overnight leader David Horsey. The Cheshire golfer’s hopes went downhill from the time he three-putted the second.
Further bogeys followed at the third, sixth and eighth for an outward 39 and his fortunes got little better on the homeward stretch which he covered in level par for 75.
It dropped him back to eighth, six strokes behind his England team-mate Moul.
The highlight of the third round was a hole-in-one by Glasgow's Jonathan King who sank his tee shot at the 211-yard 18th. It was his first ever ‘ace’ and helped him to a round of 70 for 220.
