CARL MASON WINS FOUR-WAY PLAY-OFF

England’s Carl Mason made a brilliant attempt to register his 15th European Seniors Tour victory at the Sharp Italian Seniors Open, but eventually lost out to New Zealand’s Simon Owen in a four-man play-off at the magnificent Circolo Golf Venezia.
Mason, nine strokes off the pace overnight, stormed through the field with a final round of seven under par 65 to finish the tournament in Venice on eight under 208, alongside Owen (73), Tony Allen of England (71) and John Benda of the United States (74).
The quartet returned to the 18th where Owen struck the decisive blow with a majestic wedge to two feet that set up a winning birdie.
Mason and Allen, both of whom had missed the green with their approaches, could do no better than a par 4, while Benda two putted for his 4 to hand Owen the €30,000 (£20,458) first prize.
“When you go into a play-off situation you do not know what is going to happen, but it was always in the back of my mind that I have a great play-off record. I won the Tunisian Seniors Open in a play-off, I won the German Open on The European Tour in a play-off, and I’ve won a couple of events back home in a play-off. So that at least was a positive vibe,” explained Owen, who was one over for his final round.
“I had struggled today to be honest, but to get into this position so early in the season, especially when I have been working on a little swing change, is thrilling. This will give me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.”
Prestwick's Ross Drummond, making his third European Seniors Tour appearance, finished on seven under par 209 after closing in 70, two better than England’s Bob Cameron in sixth place.
Sam Torrance closed with a 73 for a jt 12th finish on 213.
